New passing skill; sticker

Post by Redfang »

I'm not a fan of new skills but as a lot are being introduced, how about this one:

Sticker (yes a better name would be apropriate) (Passing Skill):
A player with this skill never fumbles the ball when trying to throw it. All fumble results are treated as inaccurate passes instead.

Or would it be better if the player still fumbled on a 1:

A player with this skill only fumbles the ball when trying to throw it on a unmodified roll of '1'. All other fumbles are treated as inaccurate pass instead.

Whaddoyathink?

How about:

On a fumble the thrower retains possession of the ball? (no TO).

My reply in the other thread that got locked:

Hmmm, sounds quite a lot like a Hail mary kind of thingy. I think it would be useful as it offers a new tactical option.

The dump-and-chase longbomb play against really slow opponents can be effective, but usually only when tried with a long bomb pass.

Also, it may make the diving catch skill a little less useless.

For all other purposes, I don't see a lot of throwers taking it. It still results in a turnover, and with my elves I actually prefer a fumble to an incomplete pass, since then at least the ball is still on my half, with a TZ on it.

My Bulls have the "Thin Skull" trait. After every block they make, roll a D6. On a 1+ they get ko-ed and stay in the ko-box for the rest of the game.

I like it:

Firm Grasp: When this player is attempting a pass action with a ball ignore a fumble result. The player keeps holding the ball, the pass action for this turn is wasted. This is not a turnover.

Not too strong and not too weak, a fine complementary thrower skill.

Curse you for mentioning it only works with a ball! Would have been fun to abuse it with TTM until a FAQ was created ;)

This skill would be awfully nice for AG4 though (too nice)... You throw an accurate pass on anything but a 1. So passing becomes riskless.

therefore I'd say make it inaccurate rather than a fumble; people can still choose not to use the skill and fumble when more appropriate, but can also go for the inaccurate when that is better.

IMO,
the skill that transforms fumbles into inaccurates is borderline useless.
I don't think I'd ever take it.

Cheers

That creates another loophole: Remember when the opponent is near your endzone with many players and fumbles a dodge, sprint or whatever and the ball is lying in front of the endzone - the Wood/Pro/Dark/High Elf/gutter Runner sneaks in and throws a long-bomb to get the ball downfield stripping the opponent of the chance ever to score again in that half. Under the current rules that usually doesn't work bc of the -2 Long bomb + TZ modifiers resulting in a fumble, with this you jeust need one Elf to get the ball 12 sqaures down the field with no risk :-?

That is the reason why a pass fumbles on a 1 after modifiers, the ability to turn fumbles into inaccurate creates just too much of an advantage for all finesse teams.

And it would just be some sort of Hail mary pass without auto-turnover bc you still have the chance of rolling a 6.

well that was one of the purposes I was thinking it would be useful for, but ok it was just a monday-morning thought. these aren't very good most of the time anyway :)
