Calling all Vallejo painters

Ok, what is the REAL differences between the game and model ranges?

Or is it just a branding difference. EG, they call the colours a different name.

I mean, if i get model colours REAL cheap, is it really gonna make that much difference?

It's different colours. The model range are the original vallejo colours and the game range are meant to be the same colours as those of other manufacturers (eg GW).

So my paint schemes will be slightly different then, not as colourful. Right?

they don't realy difference only on colours..
I think they are almost exactly the same! the model colours are just a far more wider range!

Just thought I could add some information.

As their name implies model colour is more widely used in static modelling while game colours are more on the way of gaming miniatures.

First difference, the game colour is specifically designed for the new plastics and metals making it more resistant to heavy handling (if using model colour make sure you use at least one or two coats of varnish).

Game range has names similar to the GW indeed, probably to try and catch some of their customers but from my point of view they are far better (the vallejo ones).

Game range is thinner than Model range (less pigment in the bottle). Means that model range covers better but tends to clog the eyedropper more frequently.

Model range has a selection of transparents (sometimes called smoke like in tamiya) wich are invaluable in some situations.

Model range is huge compared to game range.

A friend who has been using model colour in exhibition miniatures for a long time told me that model colour tends to fade a little when overexposed to sun light ( but that I believe happens with all colours, even magazines start to fade when exposed for to long on the front window of a shop). Still I wouldn't recommend, if you use the model range, playing out on the sun for long periods or have your minis catching sunlight for too long.

As for how to use the clours try this

Select the english flag and click on Mniatures and Model Colors.

On Technical Information (top of the page) you can see a thorough tutorial by master painter Mario Fuentes. On the same website you can check lots of other things like paint charts, auxiliary materials like varnishes and stuff as well as a huge selection of paintbrushes (never tried them though).

hoomin_erra the colour range is pretty good, all the same colours as gw (slightly diffrent names) and just goes on a hell of alot better. i got the first 60 paints (theres now 72 ) for £50!! which is alot better than the £100+ gw makes you shell out for worse versions of the same colours
