Can I decide to blitz after I roll the dice?

Post by seanT »

Hi,

Me and some friends have just started a league and are first time players.

I think we have a good grasp of the rules, but there's a couple details that are "discussed" (argued).

The main question is when you have to decide what the action is.

2 scenarios:

1. Can I roll my block dice, see the result, then decide if I'm blitzing? (If I punch a hole, I'll use it, but not if it never gets punched in the first place.)

2. If the ball is loose and I run a guy to it and pick it up, can I decide then whether I want to pass or handoff, or do I have to have all that decided in advance? It seems it doesn't really matter either way.

I can't see anything wrong with #2 allowed, but we're divided on #1.

Whenever you activate a player, that means you decide he does something you have to declare the whole action.
So you have to declare a blitz before rolling any dice. There is no possibility to roll the dice and if the result is convenient to declare it was a blitz.

The same goes for the pass action, you have to declare it when activating the player.

You may however decide not to perform an action you declared, so you may declare a pass action and after picking up the ball decide not to pass. But that still uses up your pass action for that turn.

You have to decide on your action before you do anything with your figure.

#1 You have to declare the blitz before the block. If the result of the block doesn't suit you (example: you wanted a push to be able to move but you only managed a both down and both have block), you're out of luck.

#2 Again, decide on the action before doing anything. Example where this might be important: If you manage the pickup without use of a reroll, you would attempt the long pass. If you needed the reroll for the pickup, you'd decide on the less risky handoff to another player instead. So that's why you have to decide beforehand.

But you still can abort the action. You can call a pass and if you need the reroll for teh pick up roll to stay by the example. You can not throw the pass. But then you may not do any other pass action in that turn.

To summarise:

there are 6 types of action: Block, Blitz, Foul, Pass, Hand-off and Move.

each player can perform 1 action.

some actions (Blitz, Foul, Pass and Hand-off) can only be performed once per team turn.

when you activate a player (before moving the player or rolling any dice) you must declare which type of action is being taken.

Thanks.

That clears it up.

I might post these on the house rule page, to find out if other people have tried and see what they think.
