use for the dark elf thrower

Post by stormmaster1 »

I know the throwere won't be around for too much longer, but i just started using one again, and found he can really help in a reasonably developed side. By placing him deep, and with sure hands and accurate he can reliably retrieve the ball and throw to a ball carrying player near the front on the first turn of recieving, so that the ball carrier can be moved forwards with the players i use to start the attack. This stops the ball carrier getting stranded by himself in the backfield, and means any players i would move back for protection can join in the attack and protect the ball carrier, it's worked well so far, but i guess it's a risk as snake eyes will really take the momentum away from the drive.

what's this about throwers not sticking around?

i love dark elf throwers. i never start my league teams with one, but i always get around to buying one eventually...sometimes even two in really well developed teams.

Well, under the new PBBL rules I guess they're going to be called Runners - 7347 Dump Off with the same thrower access. So you can still develop them into good passers if you like. I like this new option a lot

wow and ma7? Yeah I'd be for that change as well. same cost?

sure the dumpoff is generally a throw-away skill (pun intended) but you just get sure hands and pass with first 2 rolls, and if you roll doubles you take nerves of steel. suddenly the dump off becomes quite nice. nerves of steel is also a very dark elv-ey type skill too, too arrogant and smooth to be scared.

plus it fits the fluff about the dark elf running game well. i like it!

The Runner has been well received from the folks trying it so far and it definitely gives the Dark Elf team more of the running game that they have always been described as being their speciality.

yeah, for the record galak, just because i make occasional negative comments about the vault rules doesn't mean i think they're all bad. in fact, i actually like the balance of them. but there are a few things that just kill the whole thing for me.

someday when i get time i'm going to start a thread in general chat about it maybe.

or else what could just as easily happen is that we take parts of the vault rules and throw parts out. it's just a shame though, that we'd have to bring house rules back again. we were doing so well getting away from that sort of thing...

What's so bad about house rules? Our league has always used them in every edition since 3rd... And I think many, many, many leagues use them to add flavour.

Well, nothing, in and of themselves.

I think there will always be house rules in bb to a limited degree. there will never be a single rules set that everyone will embrace whole-heartedly. if this forum has a single lesson, it's that there's nowhere near a level of agreement on even the most basic principles and what people enjoy about blood bowl.

However, it would be nice to have some consistency in the game throughout the world. It would be nice to go play a game in a different town with a guy you've never played before, and not have to go through 10 pages of house rules and by-laws and so on. And then there's tourneys and so on.

Additionally, it's a big turn-off to new players. People feel like they should be able to buy the game, read the enclosed rulebook, and jump in and play. If a large portion of said rulesbook is written over with house rules in every league, that's a problem.

So, a limited number of house rules is fine, and expected. But there's a fine line between that and getting to the point where the house rules get too unweildy.

Pick up the box, read the enclosed rulebook, choose a team, order the minis from GW mailorder, paint, paint, paint, paint then jump right in and play?

in a perfect world, sure. in fact i try to make it even easier...i supply the figs to newbs for the first several games. and we buy the figs off ebay, much cheaper, and i own 3 pitches, so new players don't really even need a box either. but this was not really your point anyway.

and like i said, there are lots of things in the vault rules that are a great idea, and add a lot to the game. when they become official, i won't fight it in general, our league will likely adopt the new rules...MOSTLY

however, there are several new skills i don't like, i don't like the wimped out mutations, i don't like the FAME stuff instead of fan factor...anyway suffice to say that there will be some serious editing going on.

wes.
NOS is a passing skill in the vault. No doubles required.
