New Player Trying To Decide On A Team

Post by blitz »

Hi all,

I am totally new to Blood Bowl and I have my eye on several different teams. I have narrowed the list to about 8 teams (and several of those are still there because I think they would be fun to play if nothing else). Here is a list of the teams and why i like them.....

Amazons - an all female team seems pretty cool, plus I have read a little on other posts and they seem to be competitive

Dwarfs - I like the death roller, bombs, and chainsaw

Goblins - cheap, hard to play as, and cool weapons

Humans - an all around team to learn with, I like how their models look

Lizardmen - I have some neat conversion ideas for them

Ogres - I hear that they are very hard to play, love their models and love the big guys overall

Orcs - Some cool conversion ideas, another pretty good team to learn with, and their just plain fun to me

Skaven - need skill to play them well, cool conversion ideas

I have never played blood bowl so I have very little knowledge of how any of these teams would be played for the most part. I realize that teams like goblins and ogres are very hard to win with, but I do like them. I guess what I am looking for is information on which teams are at the top on the competition side and which ones are just the mst fun to play with and by fun I mean require the most finesse to win with.

For a newbie the general advise is to start with either Orcs or Humans.

They are both allround and especially the orcs are quite forgiving for your mistake (they wont die as easily).

For the rest of of the teams see this thread:

The thread contains an excellent summary of the teams. I would just point out that Amazon's are currently top of the NAF rankings. Although that may be more to do with Lucifer than the team?

Amazons do well in tournaments, therefore the high NAF ranking.
They are at their peak in the range TR 100-150 when not facing (chaos) dwarves.
Above TR 150 opponents have enough tackle to deal with them and their low MA and especially low AV makes them less powerful.

I'd start with a team that is competitive, since it's much easier to learn the game when not being stomped to the ground all the time. Humans or orcs are the most "basic teams" and they do fine against any team. If you want to play ball, choose humans and if you want to hit the opponent hard pick orcs.

Goblins can be surprisingly good but you have to be rather experienced to get most out of them. In my league playoffs just began with a major upset when #1 orc team lost to a goblin team which was the last team to snatch a playoff place. People tend to underestimate the little fellas.

Skaven are a very good team if you want to play scoring game. They're fast and quite agile and you can learn their style of play pretty quick. I'd concider them in addition to humans and orcs to learn the game with.

You can also check out this site: http://fumbbl.com. It's a java version of the game and great way to get familiar with the teams before purchasing the rather expensive minis.

I've narrowed my list a little bit thanks to the help that you all have given me.

Amazons
Goblins
Humans
Ogres
Orcs

I am still having trouble taking amazons off the list, but i don't really know why. I don't really have a reason for keeping them.

I doubt that the goblins will last much longer, but the idea of an underdog team appeals to me. I just heard that if you use secret weapons for kills that they can't develop skills, etc.

Humans will be a tough one to turn down. They are just so playable, meaning that I can take them so many directions.

I know that if I took ogres i would probably be dissappointed since I am so new and they would probably frustrate me.

I have a feeling that orcs would be my best bet since they can take a hit and keep my mistakes from making a big impact.

As long as you don't mind losing just about always or having a pretty bland lineup (i.e. no positionals) goblinbowl is fun.
And they can surprise you.
But to get the most out of the game starting out, and actually learning to play it, go humans or orcs.
Oh, and definitely not ogres.

I agree with most said here. Since you never played Blood Bowl before I would advice you to play Orcs, humans are good too because they have more speed. But their catcher are only agilty 3 so they will fail more than you like them to do. Humans can get all needed skills for ball handling but be aware that a 3+ roll with RR is as good as 2+ roll without a RR.

The thing Orcs are best at is surviving: AV9 is a huge change to AV8. Ok they are slower with only 4 players of MV6. To counter this I like to have a goblin on the team when I have a Troll, so I can still try to make a 1 turn score, which is fun!

Orcs/humans

Orc's are a better option couse humans are acctualy dificult to win with if you are unexpirianced (the good thing about them is you they have many fun posibilities you can, but need not, use - so they don't get boring after a while)

Amazons are realy easy to play with IMHO and they are realy good in the beginning which is good for you couse by the time they loose theire edge you will proboably want to try other teams.

Dworfs are realy easy to play (IMO boring) - ceep in mind you want be able to use deathroller to often it costs money.

Skaven are great (they are not to hard to play) - but still iwuld sugest u try them out ehen you get a bit of expiriance

Ogers& Goblins are fun but leave them for some othe times when you gether some expiriance

My favorite for newbes is Orcs

Thanks for all the help. I want to be very careful which team I pick because I plan on using the same team for a very long time. After I get a hang for the game I might try me a goblin or ogre team along with my regular team just for fun. I'm just so stubborn when it comes to choosing.

Amazons
Human
Orcs

I would say go for an Orc team. I find that Orcs are overall average in their abilities like the Humans but they are more geared towards bashing/survivability. This is offset by an overall lower movement ability. However they have quite a few options in the way they play. They can cage well, throw the ball decently (as long as you don't go for insane passes) and even have the option of tossing a ball-carrying goblin with a Troll.

All-female?

Post by Rûp »

Blitz, mate, if you really want to play an all-female team, but prefer Humies or Orkerz, you should set your google to find shadow-forge's all-female human bunny and nun teams and their female orc team.

So were Lizardmen (Sputnik), Woodelfs (Longshot), Chaosdwarfs (smeborg and me), Undead (Mordedd) if i recall correctly (sorry if i forgot someone). League play is a different thing though...

Usually in Blood Bowl you don't get just one team, but several (if not all  ). Most Blood Bowlers i know own a couple of teams and switch from season to season.

For league play i'd be a bit careful with the Amazons. Once other teams start to get tackle they loose a bit of their edge over other teams (not as harsh as Norse do, but still). After all they all have a very average stat line. Humans are a fine team to start with, but also require good coaching skill in my opinion to be really successful as they are also a little average. Orcs are certainly the best bet for a starting coach: strong, durable and average AG and movement.

If you want to stand a chance of being competitive from the start Orcs are indeed the way to go. If you want to learn the game as soon as possible I suggest humans. They are slightly more versatile and have access to all skill categories (except mutations) without having to resort to stunty players.
