count luthor

Post by Carloz »

I'm playing a league-match with my high elves against a human team. He will hire the starplayer count luthor.
Any suggestions to hold him off?
I don't have the money to hire a starplayer.
Thanks :)

Got a dirty player around? Gang up on him, take him down, foul him out.

Do you have 50k available for hiring a Wizard? You could always fry Luthor with a lightning bolt or fireball...

On defense, you need a strip ball player - and be ready to make 2D against blocks with him. Even if you succeed he'll most likely just get up and pick the ball up again the following turn.

On offense, make the most of his relatively low movement to keep the ball away from his reach. Get him to one side, and then make a hand-off to run it over to the other side. Mark him with players standing between him and the ball - without Leap, he can't get right through.

Conclusion: Be very happy if you manage a draw this match.

Better yet, make every effort to kill the rest of his team. That'll teach him to rely on Luthor, when he's missing several players for his next few matches. :)

But in all seriousness, your offensive game doesn't really change. you should still strive to score in two turns. The best way to do this is to flood the opponent's half with at least four players in your first turn. Place them in such a way that they can support each other. Check out this link to get a good idea of the kind of play I mean:

http://www.midgardbb.com/Tactics/offence.html

Defense is obviously going to be much more difficult. I can't tell you much more than to keep dodging your players away so he only gets his one blitz a turn. Even with Luthor and MB, that still gives you a pretty good chance to keep most of your players on the pitch.

You might simply be ahead to LET him score, without being too obvious about it (leave a couple obvious holes which he might use to run through with the ball). In the meantime, you concentrate on keeping your players placed in such a way that if he decides to stall instead of taking the two-turn score you give him, you can hit and foul his players enough to make him think twice about stalling any further. Again, pay attention to how many of your players are in contact with his, if you employ this idea.

Amen Bro.

Seriously, the main trap is to put too many of your players on Count Luthor, thus neglecting the rest of his team.

As said above, just foul off Luthor when you can, but don't use too many of your players on him generally, as it's not in your opponent's interest to score too many TDs with a star player anyway.

Thanks.
:( I don't have a player with strip ball skill en I don't have 50k to hire a wizard.
We'll see, maybe he kills himself with a snake eyes dodge

Mark him with a lineman all match, pref one with Block and Tackle if you have that. Hopefully Luthor takes up Blocking the player marking him. If not, well there's always the chance of double 1s when he scoots off, and with AG4 you should be able to follow him.

Luthor isn't so great at hurting players when throwing blocks, just knocking them over.

I have a lineman with block (no tackle).
So, I think it's a good idea to follow him with one player for the match.

Keeping somebody next to a Block-Dodge Str5 Ag4 player will not help you much; if Luthor needs to move dodging is easy, and if not you're jst giving him an extra block.

That's true, but the main result from that extra block is Luthor follows up one square. Sometimes in the wrong direction (away from the play) if you position your marking player correctly. (btw if you don't have a tackle lineman just put a disposable unskilled rookie by him. Don't waste a Block lineman.)

I've found Luthors main assets are his strength and mobility/agility. It's not an ideal solution, but at least this way you force your opponent to Dodge away to get Luthor near where the play is. If he doesn't then honestly it's a waste of money, who'd want to hire a star player of Luthor's cost just to have him hit the same unskilled lineman every turn? Surely Luthor will be hunting after the Blitzers and Catchers if he gets the chance.

I think letting a player like Luthor do whatever he feels like every turn without at least making him Dodge first wouldn't be good.

There's not a lot of other options, ganging up on Luthor to try and knock him over and then fouling him? That's going to take about 5 players without access to Tackle.

He will most likely use Luthor to carry the ball, so it will be unlikely that you can get a marker on him every turn. If he is a decent human coach he will play a bashing, slow style of play against your elves, since he knows he can't (usually) outclass you in scoring game. He'll just cage with ball on count and bash you to dirt. Even if you manage to force him cage a little poorly, it's usually a 2d against blitz at blodging luthor.

A wizard would have been a nice addition, since that could blast the cage open and give you 2d blitz against count with tackle and make the score 1-0 or 2-0 for you (depending on who kicked off).

Your best shot at outscoring him with no wizard might be kick skill with lion & dragon warriors flooding his side of the pitch when kicking. Count moves 6 squares, which in most cases is not enough to get the ball to cage if you kick deep. If he has thrower picking it up, you have 1/9 chance he will fail it. And then, even if he manages the pickup, he has to pass/hand off it forwards or stay deep, and you can get pressure on him.

Good luck!

not to mention hypnotic gaze. putting a sacrificial lamb in front of a mummy or black orc makes tons of sense...he's not going anywhere. with the count, it's not NEARLY that easy.

i'm just glad we're not still in 3rd ed days...i had to play a human team with 2 morg n thorgs and 2 count luthors more than once...not an easy task by any means.

With the change of Hypno G, he can't break free by using it.

If the coach is inexperienced he might make one of those typical mistake of making a normal block with Luthor instead of repositioning him. Otherwise, it's pointless to cover him unless your guy is also standing right in the way of his preferred path.
