If I have two big guys on my halfling team and one is missing a game, can I freeboot another one and stay within the rules ?

This is not quite true. You can freeboot as many as you like, provided you have the space on your roster and the money. There is, however a catch... They big guy you freeboot must be a StarPlayer big guy.

Wondering why the clarification?
Well, here's the text from the BBAnnual...

Q: Do Star Players use up positions when they join a team? For example, would Griff count as one of a team's Blitzers? And do Big Guy Star Players count against a team's allocation of Big Guy allies?
A: No to both questions.

So given the example of the question, with Halflings - you would need to have twice as much money to overcome the problem if you were hiring Morg. This is not the case if you were hiring Deeproot Strongbranch.

Of course, this question is not restricted to merely Halfling teams.

Q: Are Star Player Big Guys allowed to use team re-rolls? For that matter are any star players allowed to use team re-rolls?
A: Yes to both questions

But they are called 'Big Guy Star Players' - so go figure if they're Big Guys or not. Are they minotaurs, Treemen, Ogres etc. or not?

Well, first, I don't have the Annual, and second, that's a Q&A. Just because some newbie might get confused and call Deeproot a "Star Player Big Guy" doesn't mean he's a Big Guy. He can use re-rolls, he doesn't take a big guy slot, and he's listed no differently than the other stars on page 55 of the living rulebook. Deeproot may be big, and he might be a guy, but he's no Big Guy.

"Players like Morg'N'Thorg and Ripper Bolgrot are Star Players, so don't count against the limit of Big Guys allowed on the team."

Since when was the rulebook the annual, or the Annual the rulebook?

I also don't have the annual, what other important stuff have I missed.

Of course Deeproot is a big guy!

Morg is a Big Guy
Hthark is a Big Guy (well, actually, not anymore)
Ripper Bolgrot is a big Guy
Grashnak is a big guy

All these chappies are Big Guys, if they weren't they'd find it hard to Throw Team Mate! (O.k. so TTM isn't the pre-requisite and all, nor can they all anyway).

They are all Big Guys, because they're Treemen, Trolls, Minotaurs etc.

It's just that they're also Star Players. And when it comes to what is more important, the fact that they're Star Players has greater importance than the fact that they're big guys.

So they follow the rules for Star Players, _over_ the rules for Big Guys.

Still interested to discuss this concept in further detail? Happy to if you're not totally bored by the thread.

It's consistent with other BB scenarios.

The Annual has been incorperated into the Blood Bowl Handbook and the Death Zone Playbook - making one smooth document. On bloodbowl.com you can see a photo of Andy Hall reading it.

So the answer is recently - but definately the annual's the rulebook.

Babs, technically the big star players are NOT big guys. The list of players which follow the rules of big guys are listed in LRB page 25. It is however very undstandable that we might make the logic assumption, that some of the larger Star Players are big guys too, but it would be much less "rules confusing" if one do not make that logical link, and only read the rules on a strict basis. The only are big guys listed on page 25, and there are some huge Star Players (listed on page 55), but they do not follow the rules for big guys, and are only fitting in the group of players called star players!
