both teams with a big guy

Post by kano »

What is your position on playing with a big guy on each team??? Are you better off matching up the big guy against your opponents and letting them dance the whole game, or if you set up on offense, match your big guy up against some of his smaller players and use his strength??? I try it both ways, and I seem to have better luck smashing the small guys, it seems like the dice always fail me the other way....... :?:

Not having much experience with big guys, take this response with as much salt as you need. I think I would tend to put your strength against his weakness (line up your big where his ain't), and pin his Big Guy down with inexpensive linemen. I ALWAYS seem to have bad luck with BG and rarely use them. I would rather KNOW my move will happen rather than roll on whether I can attempt it. But I lose a lot too. :)

Depends on the big guy. A Troll holding-off a Rat Ogre is good for the Troll, bad for the Rat Ogre.

A Troll is to be used to get in the way and throw small guys. The Rat Ogre is there to blitz and tie-up key opponents.

I don't use Big Guys very often, as I find them too unreliable. When I play against a team with a big guy, I take my lineman with a couple of nigglings and have him stand in front of the big guy. This is actually fun, because you don't care if your guy gets smashed. And if the big guy doesn't have block, he will fail fairly often, which is fun to watch. And I have found that some opponents get really excited when given the opportunity to smash a little lineman with their Big Guy, and will hit with the big guy before doing other key moves, which can give you an opportunity for a turnover.

What you do with your Big Guy must serve a purpose in winning some advantage on the field. I watched a chaos player repeatedly foul a downed troll just because he wanted him off the field. Cost him two beastmen (doubles on the foul) and did no more than keep the troll stunned.

Meanwhile I'm scoring a touchdown with gobbos.

I'm not a master of tactics, but all contests are more reliably won when you play to your strengths and minimize your weaknesses; conversely, you play against your opponent's weaknesses and avoid his strengths.

I, personally, enjoy playing with "Big Guys", but then again, what is a gobbo and ogre team to do? And what is Orc carnage without a troll?

Depends on the big guy.

Rat Ogres & Mino's should avoid getting into a fight with other BGs - Av 8 vs equal strength Mighty Blow isn't good.

Trees should tie up opposing BGs as much as possible.

Otherwise I think a lot depends on the opponent. Against softer teams you are better off having your BG chase his linemen (and vice versa) - so a Troll on an Orc team should avoid a Human team Ogre - since he can hit Av8 linemen whilst his are Av9.

I think a Big Guy is absolutely necessary for Humans and Skaven as they take role the rest of the team can't do effectively. Skaven can really use the high-strength blitzer and humans need the ogre to effectively anchor their line. Teams like orcs, chaos or chaos dwarves have other players to fill those roles so for them BG's are less necessary.
