Good News, Bad News

Got a second MVP on a Gobbo Fanatic in 3 games! Rolled a smokin' 5+6; which would normally thrill me.... But what in the world does one do with a 4ag fanatic?!!!!!!! He doesn't have to dodge, can't catch, pick up or throw. A 10 would have at least made him more useful, but noooooooo! I must roll an 11.

Am I just missing something, or did Nuffle do a shuffle on me? I.e., a wasted roll of 11 on a player that can't use +Ag to advantage....

Ok, having calmed down  what is the best skill to give him now?

How would Multiple Block work on a fanatic?!

Off the top of my head, he has no tackle zones so it wouldn't do much of anything as he never blocks, but instead runs into things.

He does have tackle zones but, you're right, he can only take move actions.

Talk about limited progression!

It looks like only Mighty Blow, Guard and Grab on a regular skill roll.
Stand Firm is of such limited use imo and all the others don't fit because of some restriction involved in Ball & Chain.

Still, there may be angles I don't understand and I'm hoping someone will expose them to me.

I'd probably go for Mighty Blow first and foremost. Grab would be ok, but you'll only get a 2nd hit on the player on a 1 in 3 (ignoring the keeping the player in a TZ), and Guard is nice, but you've litle control over where the assist will end up.

Yeah - Mighty Blow would be the best option.

Youse guys are, of course, right... just hopin' there was something I had missed....

Love the little guy, even if he is erratic, he's been taking on the opposing front lines by himself and just "bowling over" the competition!!!

Just wish I could roll the armor and casualty dice to back him up.

Well, Mighty Blow will work well there. In fact, I predict that your little Fanatic will gain enough casualties in his next 4 games to get another skill roll.

The bad part, of course, is that he will either roll another 11, leaving you with an expensive yet ineffective player, or he will gain something useful (doubles or +STR) and then kill himself the next time he goes on the pitch.

Fanatic normal roll choice ... Fanatic's have 5 skills they can take on normal skill rolls that do some good (yes this is why Ball & Chain allows Grab so that the Fanatic can have 5 skills to pick from if he rolls all normal rolls for improvements).

Mighty Blow - must have

Grab - good for moving a pushed player to a square to give your next block a higher chance to hit an opponent. Ball & Chain specifically allows the use of Grab so go for it. The idea here is that your ball hits the player in such a way as to slam him in the direction you desire.

Guard - a good skill but not as good as Mighty Blow or Grab

Stand Firm - ST 7 probably isn't going to get blocked much so Stand Firm isn't that great.

Piling On - if you like to live life on the edge ... Piling On on a Fanatic is for when you really want that hit to take out a key opponent (you'll lose the Fanatic for the rest of the game as well).

Break Tackle - useless as you'll never dodge
Multiple Block - useless as it is not a Block action
Juggernaut - useless since it is not a Blitz action
Thick Skull - useless as Stuns for B&C are always KO'd

Hmmmmm, Piling on states that it can only be used as part of a blitz/block action and Fanatics only make Move actions....

Whoops. VL is quite right.

Yup that is right. Sorry ... no Piling On. ... I know why Piling On says that ... hmmmm ... oh well ... its a bit of overkill ... could just say a block thrown during the player's action .... okay so a Fanatic only has 4 skills that he can take that really help him ... the 5th is a dead slot. Not like I expect many Fanatics to reach 5 skills ...
