Slaan Team Tactics

Post by GreedySmurf »

OK so after our Commish ok'd the experimental teams for our league, I thought I'd give the Slaan a bit of a run. They look interesting.

The question now is how the hell do I play them.

I had my first game last night, and it was a disaster. However it was disaster material due to an unrelated run of the worse luck I've ever had the misfortune of seeing with my dice. Damn you Nuffle.

The question on best tactics for this team remains.

I was trying for a send the catchers downfield, and go the pass play. Is the best option? I don't really see the team as a running play/cage type.

Cheers

I score almost all my TDs on defense with this team which says a lot for the Slann style.

The Slann are good at getting at the ball from your opponent and then quickly getting it to a catcher or blitzer who you've left open within 7 or 8 squares of a TD.

Leaps to blitz the ball carrier ... Diving Tackle on the blitzers ... strategically done this can open up your opponents defense.

However ... the Slann's biggest weakness I've found is on offense. The don't really have the bash power to open up the holes and set up a running play. I rarely pass the ball ... my favorite option is a Blitzer or Catcher trying to leap the ball into the backfield for a handoff to the catcher/blitzer 7 to 8 squares from the TD. But if you opponent knows what he is doing ... this will be difficult as he is MUCH more likely to cover this scoring player if he is on defense (but often willing to leave him wide open if he is on offense).

I think Galak would be reasonably familiar with my style of offense, particularly with Humans. I'd suggest a similar style would do OK for Slann, and that Leap could be used to enhance it fairly well by enabling the screens to be setup with a bit more flexibility.

The biggest problem for Slann is that start out with little in the way of reliability skills, and to compound this their unique ability is quite risky.
