[Push vs. Stand Firm] When choose the space?

I'm pretty sure this question has been answered in the Rules forum but I'm not able to find it. In our league yesterday a situation came up when an opponent rolled a Push result on my golem and I had to decide whether to use SF depending on whether he would push me to an empty space or to a space with a ball. The question would be:

Do I decide to use SF before the blocking player's couch announces which field is he going to push my player to, or is the Push result only a "result" when it already includes the full intended execution, meaning including the space being pushed to?

I think it's the first but my opponent thought differently. Thanks.

The push result is picked 1st, then you decide to use stand firm or not, if not, then the push square is picked.
