the way i see it is that if you decide to pay your money for a membership scheme then there should be some benefits that go along with that membership.
having a slight discount (no matter how small) is a nice perk and plus if you go to enough tournaments you can pay off the subscription with the saved entrance fees.
everyone should have the right of refusal though and if someone doesn't want to join up then they shouldn't be forced to

I dont see a problem in a forced german tournament style.
I prefer the style where everyone pays a little more so that the new ones got their membership. But this requires a decent tourney size, and not so much newcomers.
Alsothe Morgs Mannheim Massacre was one of the bigest first german tournaments, and it forced to join. I liked it as it really boosted the NAF in germany.

Some points:
i) Nobody is 'forced' to join the NAF. Whether a coach wants to attend a tourney that includes NAF membership in the tourney fee is entirely their perogative.
ii) Discounts on tourney fees for NAF members are aimed at encouraging membership. If you attend a couple of tournaments a year that offer a discount for NAF members it can effectively cost you more money to not become a member. Again entirely at an individual's perogative.
iii) Prize Support. Distribution issues aside, NAF certificates for Winner, Runner Up and Best Paint go out to the relative winners at NAF sanctioned tournies whether they are NAF members or not. Likewise the exclusive NAF Tournament Champion trophy mini goes to the winner of a NAF sanctioned tourney whether they are a member or not. When we are able to get the NAF exclusive balls out (either as freebies or spot prizes) then you'll get them whether you are a member or not. What prize support we can offer in terms of minis/teams again go out to NAF tourney organisers to award to whoever wins them, whether the recipients are NAF members or not.
The NAF as been instrumental in forging the strength of the tournament scene and community as it stands today. The NAF will continue to support the love and growth of the game (as it indeed always has since it's inception). Nobody has to be a member. Those that choose to do so are contributing to the good of the community and the game in general. Those that choose not to join for whatever reason? No problem, no disrepect.
The community puts in, and the community gets out. It's not rocket science at the end of the day........

Wow ... at the Chaos Cup we agreed at the end of the event that we should not have given the NAF balls to non-members ... just seemed wrong to us that the dues of the NAF members went to pay for a freebie that non-members were getting. This was a widely agreed to feeling by most of the players around me.Deathwing wrote:When we are able to get the NAF exclusive balls out (either as freebies or spot prizes) then you'll get them whether you are a member or not.
So if this really is the policy ... need to make sure that is more clear because you are the first person Woody I've seen suggest this on the NAF balls.

Another way to look at this, Tom, is that the dues of the membership go to support the strengthening of the game via support of the tournament organizer. Perhaps it will encourage membership perhaps not, but surely if nothing else it is effective marketing to spread the name about.... serving much in the same way that the donation of GW, Impact or Shadowforge miniatures given as prizes. While NAF membership to my mind provides a number of both fun and worthwhile benefits, the mission is still to spread the word and support the game to everyone.GalakStarscraper wrote:Wow ... at the Chaos Cup we agreed at the end of the event that we should not have given the NAF balls to non-members ... just seemed wrong to us that the dues of the NAF members went to pay for a freebie that non-members were getting. Well.....I probably shouldn't say this (disagreeing with the Prez), but I am with you Galak. If someone doesn't wish to be a member, absolutely, no worries. But hell should they get the perks....what about everyone else who coughed up?GalakStarscraper wrote:Wow ... at the Chaos Cup we agreed at the end of the event that we should not have given the NAF balls to non-members ... just seemed wrong to us that the dues of the NAF members went to pay for a freebie that non-members were getting. A bit OTT for an analogy but my work colleague and I had a discussion on Monday. I give blood, he said he doesnt, why should he? When I pointed out to him that should he ever have an accident and needs blood, how about we say no? Does he think it comes from outer space? People make an effort to do so (twice a year is hardly a big deal) and who does he think he is just get the benefit when he cant be bothered to get off his arse and help out?
I would say the same here....why would you give out NAF prizes to those who say no to joining?

I would say yes you need to be a NAF member to play at the NAF world cup.
for my two penneth worth
no one should ever be forced to join an organisation they don't want to but there seem to be an alarming amount of tourneys being priced with NAF membership costs for non NAF members in their entrance fee. IMO thats just wrong and what happens next you press gang all entrants in to some other organisation?
I personaly feel that having small discounts for naf members is a good thing as it rewards those people who choose to support their hobby by joining the naf, Would BloodBowl survive if the NAF did not exist? probably. would it be as structured a community as it is with all the tournaments etc without the NAF? IMO probably not
The NAf does seem to me to be getting stronger and stronger every year perhaps its because the right people are in the right chairs, Perhaps it because I'm getting to know these people better, But I think its mostly down to the support that the BB community is giving it Through the Tournament circuit.
I will beoffering a NAF discount at the Carrot Crunch this Year but Non NAF members will be most welcome and in no way "forced" to join

1) People aren't forced to go to these tourneys and
2) surely they don't have to take up a membership even though it's included in the cost.

Once a year.
Back at Lycos, what about people like myself that can't give blood (I admit it, I fainted last time I tried, and I've been tol not to go again)? Does that mean I'm not "entitled" to blood?

Being part of the NAF should be its own reward and between NAF and its members.... NO ONE should in any way feel pressured to join for any reason other than the association with NAF's members in a positive playing environment.... To give even a discount creates a separation and supposed elitism....
You'll catch more coaches with universal equality than any coercion to joinerism....
