Skill usage: Who decides first?

Post by Lemmy »

Situation as follows:

|X
|B
|_A

| is the sideline

Player A (with grab) blocks Player B (with sidestep). Who decides first to use/not use his skills? If A decides first its no crowdpush (Grab - no sidestep / no grab - sidestep), if B decides first it is a crowdpush (no sidestep - no grab / sidetep - grab)

From memory Side Step and Grab cancel out so it would be a crowd push, I think

Yes, but I may decide not to use sidestep or grab which leaves the above situation

Ok I see what you're talking about here I think the important part of the text follows.
Grab (Strength)
A player with this skill uses his great strength and prowess to grab his
opponent and throw him around. To represent this, only while making a
Block Action, if his block results in a push back he may choose any
empty square adjacent to his opponent to push back his opponent. When
making a Block or Blitz Action, Grab and Side Step will cancel each other
out and the standard pushback rules apply.
Grab will not work if there
are no empty adjacent squares. Grab can never be used by a player
with the Frenzy skill.
While it's not implict here, I believe the intention of the wording is "when a player with the Grab skill makes a Block or Blitz Action against a player with Side Step. Both skills may not be used and standard pushback rules apply."

Otherwise, a player with Grab cannot crowd surf a player with Side Step and that's clearly not the intention of the Grab/Side Step interaction.

But I play the game for fun so what do I know

You can't get a crowdpush in that example because if there's a person in the X square they would be pushed back too.

Sorry, that's wrong, in that example if you're pushing diagonally, like this:

Code: Select all

|X..
|T..
|.B.
T = Target, B= Blocker, X = Player X

Here's the relevant LRB5 text:
Players must be pushed off the pitch if there are no eligible empty squares on the pitch..
Now if there is a player in X then there are no eligible empty squares on the pitch. So T gets shoved off the pitch, in fact you're not allowed to push him into Player X as the wording says 'must be pushed off'

This is something that's done quite often if Player X has Stand Firm or Side Step (or a friendly player on the inside square next to them) because then it requires a player with the relevant skill to shove Player X off the pitch. Fumbbl replays can show some prime examples of it in use if you look.

As you can see, Player X is a very naughty boy indeed. Answer to this? Don't stand on the sidelines unless you have a relevant protective skill and your opponent can't counter it.

You are overcomplicating things. If A decides to use Grab B cannot use sidestep so its a crowd push. There is no way that B can avoid the crowd push.

A could choose not to use grab so B could sidestep to any empty square.
