Variant on the Kick-off table

Post by IONDragonX »

I'd like to propose a variant kick-off table as I'm dissappointed in the old one.
As the kicking coach rolls on the table, I made the high results better for the kicking team.

11-12 Blitz old number was 10
Everybody knows this one. Its the ultimate defensive roll.

10 Perfect Defense
old number was 4
Still second best to the Blitz above.

9 Screen Play (Quick Snap) same
In football, that's describing a screen pass.

8 Brilliant Coaching same
Ho hum

7 I've Got My Eye On You! new
'Players with the skills Dirty Player and Sneaky Git are closely watched for this drive. They will be ejected from the game if they foul and fail to roll doubles.'
I've never liked losing the wierd weather once the game has started, yet I understand the need for 'almost does nothing' result. I've also liked the IGMEOY acronym, go figure.

6 Cheering Fans same
Ho hum again

5 High Kick same
La dee dah

2-4 Draw from the Kick-Off Deck new
'Riot, Throw a Rock, Get the Ref and Pitch Invasion are put on cards and one is drawn at random.'
The kick-off deck could also include some of the cards from the Misc. Mayhem deck. For example: Eclipse, Ball Clone, Fanatic Invasion, Rowdy/Friendly/Hometown Fans and Sprinkler Malfunction. I'd also consider Spiked Ball from the Dirty Tricks deck. All of the effects would end with the drive if not sooner. The coaches would 'dice off' to see who got to place the Fanatic and throw in from the Hometown Fans. All of the other cards would affect both teams equally. Any cards pulled out of the other decks are free to be replaced with something new. Personally, I'd get rid of the Misc. Mayhem deck altogether and just use most of it in the Kick-Off Deck.

Had to give your variant 0 stars, I'm afraid, as I don't think it is an improvement at all on the current one. Having an extra chance to get blitz is a nightmare for the opponent and I also think not having the weather roll means you could be stuck with sweltering heat for the entire game. I can't comment on the use of the cards as I have never played with them and they may well appeal to others.

If you're looking for kick-off variants, there are quite a few that have been posted before that may be of interest to you. Have a look using the search function and you should get a few to look at.

Cheers

For me, the fact that Blitz has the same chance of ocurring, and that the weather is unable to change is enough to sour me on it.

Don't forget, not allowing the weather to change at all also means that most of the time, a game will never have bad weather. One cool thing about the current table is that if a game starts in good weather, it can turn to bad weather after any touchdown.

I don't think this resolves the substantial problems with the standard kickoff table so it isn't really an improvement. A plus for questioning received wisdom though and suggesting a chance to an area in need of it.

1 star I'm afraid (and that's for effort).

Positives:
- the "IGMEOY" idea (effectively a counter to "Get the Ref")
- reducing the chance of a 3 turn riot (the game does not need this roll - 1 turn riot either way is quite enough)

Negatives:
- no weather change
- having to randomise a randomise (results 2 - 4)

Voted 0, sorry ION.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I have no problem with BLITZ and PD probability. It keeps the offence's formation in check and is a psychological tool in the defenders favour. That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

It seems to me that no one understands that an 11 - 12 has the same chance of being rolled as a 4 with 2d6. I never said anything about BLITZ being less often! The table that I suggested has exactly the same chance as before! The same goes for Perfect Defense. Exactly the same %.

As for the Weather roll, MEH. If we play in rain then we play in rain. Most of the time that I have negative weather it clears up too soon. The chance of actually changing nice weather to bad on a normal kick-off is the same as rolling snake-eyes. You could just add a weather change card to the stack that says that bad weather changes to nice and nice changes to bad weather.
All in all, I dislike the old Changing Weather result and its "I don't have anything else to do" gust of wind. (one square scatter - LAME!)

As for randomizing a random roll, we do that all the time... its called an armor break. "Roll the dice... Oooo lokit, you rolled high! roll again... Oooo lokit, you rolled high again! roll these different dice now..." Ho hum

One of the nice things about the card draw is that you don't get two riots in a row, or two pitch invasions or two weather changes (if you want to use that). You could also come up with goofy stuff for fun, like maybe a team only card (Goblins, Elves, Dwarves, etc...) Taking stuff out of the Misc. Mayhem deck seems natural to me as well. Just throw that stuff into the game! Nobody is supposed to bring that goofy, random junk just because they are the underdog! Its stuff that just happens, not really part of either team.

Its called having fun, try it! :D

afraid I voted low as well, again I don't like the use of cards. I do give 10/10 for the idea, the kick off table is one area of the game that could be improved, in my opinion some of the extremes need toning down.

But that may be me, I'm not a great fan of the weather table either. I don't mind the dice variations but where it can affect the number of players or turns available I think it is too extreme.

No it doesn't. 11 and 12 (or 2 and 3) occour 3 in 36 times and 4 (or 10) occours 4 in 36 times.

Blitz isn't what it used to be. You could make it more common and I wouldn't care.

What wonderful math skills you have. Have you actually thought about it first, or are you too stubborn to know that you're wrong?

Permutations of 4 = 1 & 3, 2 & 2, 3 & 1 = 3 chances out of 36... :P
or are you gonna assume that you can roll a 4 & 0?

Lock requested? I didn't realize that this was a forum that barred free speech! Has everyone in this forum become snobs? Is there no room for innovation left at all? I've rarely been insulted so quickly for defending myself and my own ideas. Perhaps you are quite happy talking to each other as a private club, but why then is this a public forum that allows eveyone to sign up and speak their mind?
