LRB5 and FF

Just idling reading through the rules and came across the fan factor section, it says all teams start with 0 and can purchase up to 9. Does this mean you no longer need to buy at least one?

Obviously this would change the money available for my starting roster

I've built in a minimum FF of 5 but have given my coaches an extra 100,000 to even things out (and provide them with an extra 50,000 as a sweetener to this deal)

An optional league rule is to give everyone a starting FF of 5 at no cost.... My team spreadsheet has this option built in, though my players don't seem to like it....

Forcing everybody to start with a FF of 5 doesn't do much IMO. If everybody starts at 0, or everybody starts at 5, the FAME calculation doesn't change. One difference is that when starting at 0, people's FF should go up faster as it is easier to succeed (or not fail if you lost) the FF rolls in the post-match. The other difference is if you force coaches to start at 5 and they have to pay for it, that 50,000gp is not used to purchase players and other stuff. But if the 5 FF is free, or you give money out to compensate for the lost 50,000gp, then it's pretty much the same as having everybody starting at 0.

Am I missing something?

If you let everyone start at FF 5, then you would expect to see a wider range of possible FF-values emerge rather quickly. If all teams in the league play one game, then some would have FF 4 and others would have FF 6, as compared to FF 0 and FF 1. After two rounds, some might be expected to have FF 3 and others FF 7, and so on.

Might be fun, I dunno.

Assuming that no-one spends any money on FF.
A pretty large assumtion I reckon...

If you use the FF5 option then everyone starts at that level for free... giving all coaches from 0-50000 gp extra depending on what they would've spent if they had bought FF.... Seems like that would favor teams that don't normally buy FF under LRB5.0....
