Star Players in Leagues

Post by Buggrit »

Just a query (I know that it's all up to Commissioner's Final word etc, but I'm our league Commissioner :o )

LRB 5 rules for Star Players in League Teams...
From what I can tell they're currently available only as inducements but would like to know what other people think about using them in leagues or as permanent team members...

Like you said, it's your league, so you are the law!

Having said that, we've found that keeping them as inducements works just fine.

We're running them as inducements at the moment but we've got a coach who has a human team and he wants a halfling to throw with his ogre.

Make a halfling a prize for winning a cup , give him some incentive to win

I wouldn't allow it because the human team can't do the 1 turn TD regularly. What comes next ? Wood Elves maybe want Jordell Freshbreeze in their team, giving them 3 Wardancers. Or Brick Farth & Grotty for Chaos, maybe a second Rat Ogre for my Skaven ? One little halfling could shatter the very structure of the whole (BB) universe !

We allow some Star Players (the ones that we don't consider overpowered) as permanent team members.

Each star player is unique, you can buy him only once. If something happens to him, bad luck.

For each 5 SPP's they earn, the Star Player's value increases 10K.

Star Players are Peaked: they can't get new skills.

Hope this helps. Good luck 8)

Our league uses them as inducements only. We also used to use League players whose teams had folded as freebooters (so that coaches could relive their glory days with an old favourite player), but that was back in LRB 4.

I don't even like Star Players in our league, but I can't see stunty teams being competitive w/o them and one of our coaches only plays stunties....

We keep injuries and missed games for Stars....

The problem that coaches soon realize is Stars suck down SPP and may be good for a win, but not to advance your team.... So the best star players are ones that fit in to clear the way for your own players to advance... otherwise they're a waste....

It will be a pain in the ass to decide, who can buy which star player. There are enough good players with a price below 200k and a big set of possible teams. Maybe you should allow Star Player buying after reaching a Team Value of 150 or more, at this point some star players are less useful already, but if you want them, you can use them to customize your team.

By the way, using Star Players to upgrade the bean teams... stunty one´s is the wrong way. Goblins don´t need any help, they only need a good Trainer, if you want to upgrade Halflings, you can use the optional Halfling Teams from specialist-games.com (it´s in an article called Halflings Having a Ball). And all other teams, who you can call stunty, compensate their problem. Big Time.

Wrong, both teams really benefit from that third big guy, which is what Deeproot and Ripper provide. Not having to put a Stunty on the LoS is a massive boon and also having the star gives you someone who dominates other big guys (with higher ST) and can mix it up without worrying about what happens if he gets CAS'd.

And don't anyone even dare suggest that the Ball and Chain fanatic works instead, it's a secret weapon, so you can't rely on it all game. Plus once it's down, it's out.

I never said, that they couldn´t get any stronger with a third big guy, but wouldn´t you think, that three guys with strength 5 or above would be... overkill? I mean, It´s way stronger then the LRB 4 Ogre Team when you consider the hidden weapons the Goblins own. I don´t want to have stronger teams, my last match against the green plaque was a bloody mess and I could only win in overtime after tricking all hidden weapons out of the game. Well, I think two big guys are already the best, those puny chums should have... And if they doesn´t want to get hunted, they shouldn´t play stunty teams, they should play orcs or chaos ^^

We allow star players as inducements in regular season matches, but they are banned from playoff games.

Our new league which is starting in two weeks will be allowing 0-1 Stars to be permanently purchased on a team. Same prices.

More than one team can have the same star, the 2nd must just call him a different name. Teams can also induce stars as normal and even if they are already being induced or permanently purchased on another team.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm not too worried. As someone stated earlier, a lot of stars can help you get a win, but it may be at the expense of building up your players.

One day you may be in a crucial playoff game and your Star gets injured on the first turn. You then have to rely on a bunch of unskilled players to help you win.

Also, Stars have Loner, which also makes a difference on how much "ballhogging" they can do.

Stars are fun, and our league likes the idea of painting up a star to match your team's colors.
