That's often a good idea, but I guess that you've got at least one blitzer with Guard? Pairing up multiple Side Step+Guard players is awesome, two players can keep four opponents bottled up nicely.
If you're not planning on getting Guard on any blitzers, then Stand Firm is a great option. Only Leader would compete with it IMO, as it allows your throwers to concentrate on being excellent throwers.

I hadn't thought to get guard on any of my blitzers on doubles at this stage. I think I would more likely go for nerves of steel or mighty blow (One has MB already)
I'll have a look at stand firm, it sounds like a an alright combo...the linesman will just need to try and get dodge or block if he lives long enough to see a third skill.
Side-step seems like it could achieve the same thing in most situations tho and maybe a bit more useful in general play'...hmm I'll have to have a think about both of these options.

You have to roll the doubles to get the guard...any lucky linemen will certainly get guard.
You only get 2 blitzers. They are going to be making the majority of my blocks as they have block and the best armour value on the team so I would rather help them block better (MB) or generally improve my passing game (NoS).
It's kinda moot anyway as the player we are discussing already has guard

I'd forget about the double roll and get Block, Dodge or SideStep. Side Step is better than Stand Firm on that guy IMO, so no point in increasing your TV for an inferior skill for the player's use.
The best Elf lineman IMO has Guard, Block, Dodge and SideStep. If you play bashy, I'd take Block first, then Side Step and Dodge last. If you play the avoid game, then Dodge, Side Step then Block. Depends on how much tackle there is in you league as well.

I love Stand Firm, and I'd almost never take it on an Elf. Sorry. I'd go for Block or Side Step first, unless you're really worried about Grab and are pretty sure the guy will go up again (big fat variable on an AV7 nose tackle). If it was roll #3 and he already had Block, I'd be all over Stand Firm.

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

I don't think that that's always the best approach. It works, but I think that it would be better to make use of the extra point of AV by making them the players that the other team targets most, rather than the players that target the other team. Once a player has Block (and some of his teammates have Guard), he (probably) won't be going down when he's blocking, so AV doesn't matter: use your linemen and catchers for blocking. Use your blitzers, who come with two of the best defensive skills in the game, for protecting everyone else on the team. All they need is Dodge in order to become exceptional roadblocks, and Guard to help the blockers block effectively. After that, you can tailor them any way you like.Big Daddy wrote:You only get 2 blitzers. Block+Mighty Blow makes anyone on your team a great blocker (especially the catchers). Might as well make use the Side Step and extra AV.

Side Step is great on Pro Elf linos. Once you've got 3 of them (nose tackle, both ILBs) plus your Blitzers at cornerback, you're invulnerable. Side Step can help you ensure you don't get chain-blocked, so on a nose tackle it's about as good as Block for saving your player.

Matt plays a convincing tune on his side-step drum all over this forum...hmm
In comparison to block I guess you trade in the ability to stay up on a both down for the ability to move where you want and keep lending assists on push results. I will have to think about it a bit more, I know that hands down my guard lineman is the most targeted as he brings so much to the team.

(Taken from How things Work - http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/football.htm)
The diagram gives you a rough idea of the positions the guys are using. Generally we have been talking about defensive set ups for elves as if things are going well we should be defending for most of the game.
Generally we have three elves on the Line of Scrimmage. Right tackle, Left tackle and Nose Tackle (middle guy). The diagram above is probably more suited to bashier teams who are better at stacking the LOS than elves.
In our wide zones we have our Outside Linebackers and our corner backs. Often the blitzers end up as the CB as side-step means the opponent can;t open a clear path down a side line with a single push result.
Inside Line Back (ILB) is usually a line elf or in my case usually a blodge catcher. These are the guys that are usually just inside the central part of the pitch and provide tackle zone coverage between your wide zones and your LOS. In my case they are also usually the guys that look to push into the opponents half looking to sack or position to score in event of a turnover.
HTH...and hope I'm right, I know Aussie rules not American

Personally I think he's on commission...Big Daddy wrote:Matt plays a convincing tune on his side-step drum all over this forum...hmm
But Block, Side Step (Dodge if you like) is the right way to develop this guy.
It's not worth taking Stand Firm at 30k vs Side Step on 20k.
Especially not on a team with lots of Side Step so Grab is less effective.
