winning with the worst team... goblins or halflings!!
Ok so I want a challange or maybe I want two BIG GUYS! how can you win with goblins or halflings... I am bored and thinking about playing one of these cheap teams... You can't buy star players and keep them in League play (so I am told I think.) right?
However I could play Undead where you can buy several mummies and buy there cheap 30k players and get the same result with potentials later.

Goblins are fun to play. They were my first team, and I won several league championships with them.
Big guys are a great help, but it is too easy to become dependant on them. Remember, that is a LOT of money you are spending on them... all it takes is ONE dirty trick, and you are in deep trouble.
When I use the big guys, I primarily send them after key players on the opposing team... throwers and catchers. Bash them a bit, then let the gobbos do their thing (which means they grab the ball and run like hell!)
I actually prefer to NOT use a big guy. All goblins, all the time. You save a lot of money... which means you can spend it on other things! Pull out every dirty trick you can! Use your apothocary and wizards! And take advantage of EVERY opportunity to gain Re-Rolls!!!! NEVER make a block 1-on-1.. always gang tackle.
In a long season... try to protect a couple key players every game... develope thier skills... a star blends in easily in a crowd of gobbos! Then you can suprise the opponent with some skills that he was not thinking of!

I guess my question is why not play Undead and but its cheap player at 30k ?? You could then build from there.. all cheap tricks?? You mean by buying star players?? you can only use them for one game and thats what sucks! What about Halflings? You mean Goblins right? not Gobo's(another character to me anyway)

halflings
i just started using halflings about 12 games ago...and finally started getting the hang of them. they are a blast. i think they are the best fo the little guys..why? casue they are short and fat and make me giggle

Goblins I find can and will be very viable. You don't cry much when you go into a fouling frenzy...you've got two big guys, and two secret weapons if they are admitted. And if you use Ogres it's amazing how a chuck goblin can work as a one turn play.
It's very viable...provided you are willing to put up with Stunty...which in itself has a lot of pros and cons. Great for the mega dodge, lousy when he
gets the beats into your team.

More than once I've scored with Halflings with a series of 5 dodge rolls in a row for a player.
The tricks to winning with Stunties. Always try to leave your opponent with only a blitz action to hit you. Also set up the TTM play so if you get lucky to get the ball when on defense you might be able to score immediately. Finally Dodge, Dodge, Dodge ... You only have an 11% chance of failing a dodge roll into you use the Dodge skill, so go for it. A if you have the number advantage (which you should) ... foul.

An additional +1 mv can make all the difference, as can the +1 av.
Just repeating what the other coaches have said. Only block on your own terms.
As for dodging don't forget the use of stunty. You can dodge through your opponents tackle zones regardless of the modifiers. This makes scoring easier, but also cover play easier.
Say one gobbo has made it through the oppo line, you can dodge even more gobbos through to protect him. My favorite use of this tactic is to create the green corridor. It doesnt work all the time.... but its surprisingly resilent considering that the players are st2!
Lastly big guys. I would always go for the 2 Big guys. They are expensive and until they get block, they are quite the liability. Even after that, double skulls will come up every now and then. What i would encourage budding little guy coaches to do would be design most plays around the big guys going last. That way if they do double skull it ain't such a big deal.
