chain pushing a prone/stunned player

Post by TuernRedvenom »

I always thought you could chain push a prone player but the rulebook says:
Push Backs: A player that is pushed back as a result of a block
must be moved one square away from the player making the
block, as shown in the diagrams. The coach of the player who
made the block may decide which square the player is moved to.
The player must be pushed back into an empty square if
possible. A square containing only the ball is considered empty
and a player pushed to it will cause the ball to bounce (see page
13). If all such squares are occupied by other players, then the
player is pushed into an occupied square, and the player that
originally occupied the square is pushed back in turn. This
secondary push back is treated exactly like a normal push back
as if the second player had been blocked by the first.
The coach
of the moving team decides all push back directions for
secondary push backs unless the pushed player has a skill that
overrides this.
but you cannot block a prone player so you cannot push it back either?

The bold sentence is mainly concerned about "direction" of push although the text may be a bit misleading.

So yes, you CAN chainpush a prone player.

Yup, that's my understanding, too.

I think that was the intention but I don't see how that can be deduced from the text. The wording is very "fuzzy" and tbh, I can see people not having played BB before interpreting this wrong.

100% agree. But I don't have a way to write it more clearly.

Would this be a clearer replacement for the bold line

The direction of the secondary push back is determined as if the second player had been pushed back by the first.

This would be a good one for the FAQ at the back of the rules, kind of like using Pass and Hail Mary Pass together - it's implied by the rules, but isn't 100% clear. I think it's more practical to explain uncommon cases in the FAQ section than in the rules proper.

AS IF can also mean (as if the 2nd player had been standing and blocked)

Which by the way is how it is meant.

So YES you can chain push a 2nd player who is prone.

I could not find the thread on Cyanide to clarify this but this IS the correct answer.
