***COMPETITION*** - Design a new skill for the MBBL2

Post by Joemanji »

Hello gentlemen! :D

The MBBL2 is a heavily house ruled play-by-email BB league run by Tom Anders (Galak). We are having a recruitment drive, and as a sweetner for any potential new coaches out there, we thought we'd give you the opportunity to actually write some of those rules for yourself. Neat, eh? :D

This competition invites you to design a new skill.

It's simple enough. Just post your idea in this thread and we'll choose the three we like best. That skill will then become an official addition to the set, some of which made it into the official LRB5 rules (e.g. Kickoff Return). There are a few basic guidelines however:

1) The skill must not require any additional programming in the PBeMBB tool. If you are not familiar with the tool someone here will point out any issues and help you to correct them. A general rule of thumb is that if it interrupts an action it's a no-no. If it is a different way to interpret the results of a dice roll (e.g. Fend) then it will probably be OK.

2) The skill must not be too similar to any of the current MBBL2 skills. A list can be found here.

3) The MBBL2 is a power league and we don't need more power skills. So skills that increase the number AV breaks or INJ aren't going to make it in.

Cheers
Joe

Had a quick browse through my skills and the only one that I think might be compatible with the MBBL is Screen - any player dodging from and to the tackle zone of a player with Screen gains a +1 bonus to their roll. All my other skills that aren't in (like post-snap movement) probably don't fit with the tool. The MBBL doesn't have many Kicking skills yet and this is also an area where I'm hoping to improve but there should be quite a lot of conceptual space for a new skill there.

Dunno if this would count as a skill or would be bought as a piece of equipment but...

Sneaky Shoes of Sneaking

A player with the sneaky shoes of sneaking may subtract two from any secret weapon rolls they make but must also subtract two from their movement (sneaking isnt a fast way to get from A to B). They may also add four to any shadowing rolls (but remember to take into account their reduced move too).

Ok, my idea is for a skill entitled Play Action Champ a passing skill

A player with this skill who is not in any tackle zones can easily spot what the offense is attempting to do during it's run/pass scheme. His ability allows him to shout a warning to all pass blockers and increase the number of squares they can take by +2 getting a jump on the offensive manoeuver.

this could work against the run with a small change to pass block that would give it more of a 2ed Heroic Tackle feel. Which would amend it to Run/Pass Block

"If an opposition player holding the ball is in scoring range at the start of their turn. Run/Pass Blockers can move up to 3 squares to intercept them and place a tackle zone on them.

Failure to reach that tackle zone would work as it does now for Pass Block.

this would increase the taking of Pass Block which given the changes to Safe Throw would be a good thing.

It is not too strong as to benefit from either change you have to take a defensive skill with limited use, it does however target both styles of play and as a passing skill would be of use to all teams on a double

I know the wording of Run/Pass Block would have to be carefully done, but I have felt that this would be good for a while now. Brian Urlacher would be one of those in RL who would be assumed to have it......

Taunting

Instead of doing an action, the player declares an opponent to have been taunted. If that opponent wants to block, blitz or foul someone, it has to be the taunting player. If he choses not to block, blitz or foul, the taunt is cancelled. Only works against players with equal or higher st. As soon as the taunted player has tried to block/ blitz or foul the taunting player, he can't be taunted by the same player again.

Distract - bringing back an old 2nd edition favourite.

This player exerts an additional -1 to all opponents catch, pass and pick-up rolls in his tacklezone (so when on his own, opponent catches on a -2). In addition, this skill exerts the -1 on players with skills that would normally ignore TZ (nerves of Steel, big hand).

Scramble - this player is adept at throwing the ball whilst on the move. This player may continue his movement after throing a successful quick or short pass. A successful pass is one that ends in the hands of one of his teams players (including the thrower himself). He may not continue his move after attempting a long pass or long bomb.

There is no "I" in "TEAM", but there is an "M" and an "E", and that spells "ME"

Inspired by the fact that a player with Diving Catch is better at catching passes than hand-offs (which make no real life sense, let's face it):

Steady Hand (P) The player has practiced handing off with his team so much that he can almost read their mind as they reach for the ball. All rolls to catch hand-offs made by this player have a +1 bonus.

passing access and thus doubles for most catchers makes this skill at first read seem pretty ulow tier.

But I'll give it a re-read and more thought. It's not horrid, I've just not found the players that scream for this maybe. (And possibly there are some in the MBBL 2 's 80+ races, I have not looked in a long while.)

It's not for catchers. The person with the ball gives a +1 bonus to the catcher. It's the opposite of all other skills that way: e.g., Diving Catch works only on the person with the skill. Steady Hand works only on everyone else. So you're improving the skill of up to 10 players by giving Steady Hand to one player.

I see the confusion in the wording though. Maybe something more like:

... When performing a hand-off, this player places the ball so perfectly for the catcher, that the catcher receives a +1 bonus to his catch roll.
