Spiralling Expenses (clear?)

In the last two months I've run into one BBRC member (who will remain unnamed) and 2 decently long term players that thought that Spiralling Expenses could not be more in a match than the amount of winnings.

However they can. You can lose all your winnings and money from your treasury from Spiralling Expenses.

My question is ... are the 3 people in question just reading the rules too quickly and applying what they think should be allowed to happen or are the rules actually unclear on this point?

The rules state and I quote.(emphasis mine)

Successful teams can be worth a fortune as their players improve and the squad grows. During the early days of Blood
Bowl the Dark Elf team, Terrifying Anarchists of Naggaroth, were
reputed to be worth in excess of 7,000,000 gold pieces! However
as wages and other team expenses increase, a bigger proportion
of the team's winnings get devoted to just paying the bills rather
than being available for additional purchases.
Once a team’s value equals or exceeds 1,750,000 gold pieces
they must deduct the amount shown on the Spiralling Expenses
table from their treasury. Spiralling expenses are deducted at the
end of the match during step 3 of updating the team roster.
Spiralling expenses can never reduce a team’s treasury to less
than zero.

3. Any gold left in petty cash is transferred back to treasury
and then each coach must now pay for spiralling expenses
(as described later) through gold in treasury. Note: at this
point you will not yet have updated your team value from the
value calculated after step 2 of the Pre-Match Sequence

This is pretty clear to me. Apply your winnings then take away spiraling expenses. This has to be a case of reading too fast?

Or people being taught to jam their spiraling expenses into the winnings roll from bd habits?

I would say it is a case of reading too fast. I get it but truth be told I dont have much dealing with expenses as the furthest my teams go is 10-13 games. But when I have got that far then, if I pause and think about it, yes, that is how I understood it.

I'll admit to being one of the people who thought you could never have spiralling expenses higher than the winnings in that particular match.

Having said that, Ive never actually had to APPLY the spiralling expenses rules to a team, since me and my friends just dont really get our teams that far before being fickle and switching to a new team.

It wasn't until I read a thread here on TBB that I realised I was wrong. Of course, thats happened with quite a few things. BB is a pretty complex game in the end. I can't really blame the wording. Its clear as day. I'd just never taken the time to make sure of my understanding.

It wasn't clear to us until our second season. Mainly because only one team got there so no=one really bothered to read it thouroughly. But the next season we figured it out even though we never reach spiraling expenses.

If you read the relevant text, I don't think you can get confused.

Personally, I'm always confused when I read this section about the order of events calculating TV and when to remove Spiralling Expenses, and where from.

Although the rules are clear, I have come away thinking that if you roll 60k on winnings but have no money in treasury, spiralling expenses have no effect.

Now winnings and unspent petty cash are applied to treasury before spiralling expenses is deducted, but I have needed to doublecheck a few times.
