Hypnotic Gaze, before or after attempting to pick up a ball?

Post by Mocaiv »

Scenario: Ball is lying next to an opposing player (in this case it was a Saurus). A Vampire moves into the square with the ball. Can he use his Hypnotic Gaze BEFORE attempting to pick up the ball (thus negating the Tackle Zone of the opposing player)?

I know that the old hypnotic gaze was counted as a free action that could be done at any time. I just read the LRB2 description and thats not ture any more. You have to do it after declairing an action for the vampire and before another team mate does anything. Other than that its not clear. Personally I woudl say that you can, because failing to do so, you still have to attempt to pick up the ball and get the -1 tz to do so. The risk of the turnover is still there.

if he can still use it after moving, then why couldn't he use it before picking up the ball?

I guess he could.

after re-reading the rules I would say yes....

He could move in and use hypnotic gaze before picking up the ball.

Any other opinions ?

Hypnotic Gaze can be used at any time during a player's action.

So yes, if could Gaze and then try to pick up the ball.

Yet another Luthor for the BB perchance?
I've decided against him this year.

Does this also mean that on a blitz action you can knock a player's tackle zone off the ball, and then attempt to pick it up?

Yes, though all you can then do with it is run in to score - you can't pass or handoff with the player who blitzed, since he's doing a blitz action.

:o Wow. That's a significant change from the way our league plays. We force a pickup before you are able to knock the TZ off the ball. Is there a clear example of this in the Living Rulebook I can show them?

Oops, I may have misunderstood you. I thought you meant that you blitzed from a different square, moved the player, and then moved into the square to pick up the ball. Erm, given the context, it is probably clear that you didn't mean that.

Sorry... no, if you enter the square containing the ball, you try to pick it up before you do the blitz.

*whew* (there's no emotacon for relief)

Visions of strength teams more easily knocking TZ's off the ball were dancing in my head.

Since this is the case, and Hippie Gaze is a skill, how are Vampires able to gaze TZ's off before picking up the ball? Isn't the ball pickup a forced action that has to be taken before anything else?

For consistency with the Blitz rules I'd say you needed to pick up first. Enter square, resolve pickups in that square, do jiggery pokery with players in other squares.

No specific rule that I can find that states that but it's how I would rule it.

In our league we play that if you enter the square with the ball you need to try to pick it.... as soon as you enter the square.

As the rules say that THEN he can carry on moving we didn't get into the arguement if doing something else will be a "better try" to pick the ball... :D

That is... if you are playing with Count von Drakenborg he will have a better change to pick the ball if he uses the HG in a oposing player, so, he is really trying to pick the ball, harder.... :)
