Filling out a Wood Elf Roster

Post by AviStetto »

I just finished a season with my veteran wood elf team (35 games), and was fortunate in that I had NO permanent injuries to my team during the season. As a result, I now have a roster with 15 players, 4 team rerolls, an extra trophy reroll for the next season, and 200k in the treasury from the semi-final and final matches. The question I have is if I should fill out the last spot on my roster (a 4th catcher) and/or buy another reroll. Or, should I consider sacking a player or two? If I don't spend the money, Spiraling Expenses will probably start eating away at it.

MY ROSTER
Team: Ath'Tahlik'lian
Wardancer - Side Step, Tackle - 22spp
Wardancer - Juggernaut, Strip Ball, Tackle - 47spp (oh so close)
Lineman - Block, Guard, AV-1, Niggle - 18spp
Lineman - Block, Dodge - 18spp
Lineman - AG+1, Dodge, Leap, Pass Block - 51spp
Lineman - Block, Kick - 26spp
Lineman - 0spp
Lineman - Block, Dodge, Niggle - 24spp
Lineman - 0spp
Treeman - Grab, Multiple Block - 29spp (1 cas away)
Catcher - Block, Dauntless, Side Step - 41spp
Catcher - Block, Dauntless, Tackle, Side Step, Wrestle - 85spp
Catcher - Block, MA+1, Nerves of Steel, Side Step, Sure Feet - 97spp
Thrower - Dodge - 7spp
Thrower - Accurate, AG+1, Dodge, Kick-off Return, Safe Throw - 120spp
Re-Rolls - 4 plus a trophy
Fan Factor - 11
Treasury - $200,000

TEAM VALUE - 2,580,000

What do you guys think I should spend the money on?

I would only carry 14 players.

And I would carry the 4th catcher.

So to me that means cutting these two.

Lineman - Block, Guard, AV-1, Niggle - 18spp
Lineman - Block, Dodge, Niggle - 24spp

And then buying catcher number 4.

Other than that and the apoth which I assume you have but forgot to mention... I think you are set to go as far as players are concerned.

I'd develop my team differently (and have), but that isn't what this thread is about.

Best of luck.

I wouldn't fire either of those players. The -AV/Niggle lino with Guard is a dandy OLB who will eventually get rid of himself, and the other guy is a fine player with a minor drawback. I'd fire a rookie Lino and take a 4th Catcher, that's what I'd do. Then maybe don't replace the next Lino to die.

Keep everyone, bank the cash. When someone dies (or gets a retiring injury) then buy the 4th catcher.

Let me further defend my path.

From high TV wood elf experience I can tell you that banked cash will just get eaten by Spiraling expenses. It will just get eaten away until you can't use it.

And sure a niggled guard player will die on his own anyway. But when he leaves the pitch, it is possible that some-one else will leave with him too. because playing short handed is proven to be more deadly. Even to woodies. Wood Elves are easy to skill up. Chances are one of those rookie line-elfs will get doubles and can take guard to replace these players (or one of the next 6). Especially if you place them on the pitch and let them earn SPP. Seriously, how hard is it to get 11 sp and thus Blodge on a line elf? Cut the niggled player and in about 4 matches you can have another with the rookie and the catcher with skills.

Will you have the money to replace the line elf with a catcher if you wait until he exterminates himself? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you'll need to replace a Wardancer then.
It takes only one lost match with a winnings roll of 1 with -3 SE to turn that 120 k into 80k which is not enough to buy a positional. Plus, why give out easy Cas SPP to your opponents and let them skill up off of you?

Pro-active management of TV and replacing players is the way to handle Wood Elves. You have the money and with the niggles, the players are not worth thier TV. Replace them with players who can grow and become even better maybe. At a minimum the new players won't skill up to be worse.

I'd be inclined to get the 16th player.

In the circles in which I play, the best coaches with bash teams will punish any short roster. As would I. Even one player short.

Hope this helps.
