Playing With / Against Amazons

Post by SierraKiloBravo »

I've been playing for awhile, but I really don't have that much experience playing against Amazons. They've been relatively rare in my league thus far. I've read up on what's available here in order to get a general idea as to what to expect. I'm playing a Pact team and giving up about 500k in inducements in a 5.0b environment.

My understanding is that they're generally a slow running team, sort of between skaven and undead with regards to overall team speed, so I should generally expect an attempt at a 4 turn or so scoring drive. I would generally expect them to make use of the dodge to reposition the cage as much as possible. On defense, I would expect them to try to stall my cage by dodging one square away from it and generally marking my big guys with linewomen.

As for inducements, it would seem that Willow Rosebark, with the ST4 and Dauntless, would be ideal to use against my big guys, along with the wizard.

If I were playing with Amazons in this game, I would be dodging as much as possible away from the big guys and try surgical hitting and not try to stand toe to toe with the higher AV team. I think I would also be trying to score at a reasonable rate, but not too fast or too slow, because either would probably expose the AV7 to too many hits.

Thoughts? Does anyone on here have a lot of experience playing with Amazon, or more specifically, with Amazon and against bashing teams? Am I missing anything? Thanks.

You should do a search for any posts by Chet Zeshonski as he took them to the early tournies and used to walk out with a lot of 4-0 wins

If you are giving up 500k then you are probably up against a relatively undeveloped team. As such try to ensure you are blitzing with your block players against his blockless ones as much as possible. Av7 means 'zons get hurt quite easily.

If you've got tackle then try to mark as many 'zons as possible with it - whilst protecting your tacklers from return hits (e.g. big guys/guards flanking the tackle).

Willow looks good value, but Zara and Betha might be good options for him too.

A lot depends on how your opponent sees the relative match up. If he thinks he can win he might get stuck in and rely on dodge to keep him on his feet - rather than trying to dodge away a lot.

I've played Amazons with orcs, but the specific amazon team I play has had som extremely lucky increases that has given them a well developed passing game, so I don't think their offense is representative of the race.

However, as Ian mentions unless you have a bit of tackle they might use their dodge to get stuck in. Most Zon teams start with at least four blodgers, and any increase converted to block creates another one. That combined with their AG 3 means that they will often (in my experience) try to block opponents away from them, rather than dodge out.

The dodge skill does give extra mobility to the cage, but if they rely on being able to dodge players forming part of the cage around they are bound to fail - so keep the pressure on.

i don't Dodge away using Zons as a rule - they're more bashy then some people give them credit for

expect only the 1 blitz in return though unless the Zon player is moving in for the score and want to tie your players down

How experienced is the coach? Can you please post up a detailed outcome? I am taking Amazons into my local league since they have yet to make an appearance at all and there isn't too much information on them I can find.

Amazons are bashy when used correctly.

And they will likely make good use of those inducements: chainsaw, babes maybe Zara.

Expect him to be dodging away from your big guys and suffering a lot of 2D blocks on your marauders.

I hope you've got a Block Frenzy/Tackle guy for your blitzing. As Ian says, pick on the blockless linos to try and win the numbers game.

I'm not sure why he'd be going with 4 turn scores though. Unless he think you've got no chance and wants to rack up the SPPs he'd be better off with slow 8 turn grinds.
