Out of order game

Post by reservoirelves »

I'm the commish of a fixed schedule league. Two teams are scheduled to play each other on week X, and they do. However, neither team played their opponents for week X-1 so they played their game out of order. This has never happened in our league before and I'm not sure what, if anything, to do about it.

Any ideas?

Shift the missed games to the end of the season?
Or
Get the players to play the missed games as soon as possible without altering the schedule any more, so effectively they'll have to play on a different day to usual and possibly at a different venue depending on your set up.

This is the reason we dont do a fixed set up for our league, we'd forver be chasing people to catch up with games

Get them to play asap in their own time.

If you want to punish them say they don't get an MVP for the game.

Hmmmm, "get it in before either of you play the next game, or consider it a forfeit."

However...

IF the circumstances were genuine (illness, business trip, family affair, etc.), then push the game to the end of the season.... If anything, one game back means they lost on the opportunity for SPPs/MVP....

Maybe canvass the rest of the league for opinions... democracy and all that stuff...?

I'd go for this one. Up to you to decide whether they need punishing!

I find that punishing people who have spotty commitment to the league makes them more flakey, not less...

I should have said game week instead of week. Once the league schedule is set coaches are responsible for scheduling and playing their games since it is rare that everyone is able to show up to the official league night. We don't have game weeks every week so that when RL intrudes we can catch up. There was no logisitcal reason to skip over a game, they just played the wrong one first.

I like the idea of no MVPs for the out of order games so I'll probably go with that. Doing nothing doesn't see right and a forfeit is overkill (I'd rather see the games played) so the MVP loss works. Since I have admin rights to the league website I might even change the team names to something less complimentary than they are now :D . Thanks for weighing in.

Well, it seems/sounds like a genuine mistake to me. I wouldnt be too harsh on it, maybe something like "NEXT time someone does somehing like this, .... happens. For now, consider yourself warned (and everyone in the league as well)."

But I'm a softy, what do I now... 8)

If two people played out of order, then let their opponents in the next match play the one match first and then play them, so you don't give them a 1-week advantage. As long as it's an honest mistake, it's not a big deal.

Making them undo the match and play over in the right sequence is a bit harsh, but if one team really got killed you might be able to convince everyone that it's for the best.

If you ever catch someone doing it on purpose, give their next opponent a free 100k handicap and dock them their next MVP. But punishing simple mistakes is one of the fastest ways of killing a league.

Forcing a forfeiture, simple though it is, should be reserved for failure to play on time after receiving an extension: it's a terribly cruel thing to do in a fixed league and is only a better alternative than seeing the whole season go down.
