Touchback or Not?

Post by polemarch »

Quick question about kick off and whether or not this is a touchback.

Ball is kick and scatters onto a player on the LOS. This is after rolling on the kick off table.

The Player fails to catch/pick up the ball and it scatters into the opponents half, where it is either caught or ends up in an empty square.

Is this a touchback, or play on?

cheers

yes it is a touchback

if the ball leaves the receiving team's half of the pitch at any time during kick-off for any reason, it is a touchback

in this situation, the opponent doesn't even get the chance to catch the ball

My interpretation is that the catch on the LoS is a 'free' catch as it is still during part of the K.O. stage as it is before your first turn, and as such, a failed catch going into the opponents half would be a touchback

Yes, If it ends up in the opponents half it's a touch back.

But, I have a question. If the ball enters the opponents (defenders) half to where a defending player is on the line, is it automatically a touchback? or do you resolve weather or not the defending player actually catchers/picks up the ball.

The chances being: He takes possession of the ball (which is then a touchback), Drops the ball on the defenders side of the feild (touchback), or the other possiblity that he drops the ball back to the attackers side of the feild.

So the question is: Does the first instance of the ball entering the defenders side stop play and results in a touchback or do you play all possible scenarios and wait to see were the ball comes to rest before determining touchback or no.

Leaving the half = immediate touchback. The opponent does not get to roll for the catch.

Of course, you can let the defender try to catch the ball, then laugh/cry when he manages it, and the ref comes along and takes the ball away from him.

Totally correct ... that is how I would picture the rules in animation.

Can we get Cyanide to program that scene ...

Well they do actually roll to catch it. If they succeed the golden glow is then whisked away to whoever the receiving team wants.

Thanks for the clarification.

it seems almost unfair!.... I used to referee rugby and I always found it funny the amount of times players would attempt to catch a kick off that didn't go 10 and he up giving their opponents the ball.

I am all with Galak asking Cyanide to program this, along with a big hissy fit!

considering what the Cyanide team has done with Galak's input so far, you might as well wait for Hell to freeze over
