Set-Up change to be more like American Football: WDYT?

Post by mattgslater »

Instead of the kicking team setting up then the receiving team, how would the game be different if it were like this?

1) Receiving team sets up
2) Kicking team sets up
3) Receiving team moves one player not on the halfway line up to 3 squares (or MA, if less) to any legal position
4) Kickoff
5) Receiving team goes first

I mean, isn't that more like the way they do it at all levels of American Football, with motion rules and all? I mean, I know it doesn't really translate, as a BB drive is played off a kickoff like a special teams play, rather than off a snap, but still....

How would this change the game? It would certainly put more of an offensive focus on game-planning....

Just to clarify, this is the same as allowing anyone on your team to use Kick-Off Return, right?

Sounds like it to me. Wouldn't it be easier to just give all teams KoR for one player per drive? :)

No, not at all. Just a single superficial similarity. In fact, it's about as much like KOR as it is like Pass Block.

A) Receiving team sets up first, kicking team second.
B) Man in motion does his bit before kickoff.

My instinct is that this would massively favour defensive teams like Orcs and Dwarfs. Whilst AG3 teams like Humans would be virtually unplayable.

You may well be right. I had that concern, but I think it could be tweaked out. But heavy teams would have trouble positioning Guard for offensive plays, and if there are any gaps on the LOS, a speedy defender will be able to get an extra square into the backfield. And speed offenses would just spread out on the line against bash.

It would certainly increase the value of Leap, and of offensive skill development in general.

What if the "from off the line" requirement were removed, so an OL player would be able to shuffle over to a less unfavorable position as the man-in-motion, so long as the final arrangement had 3 players on the line.

What about the following tweak?

1) Receiving team sets up.

2) Kicking team sets up

3) Every receiving player is allowed to move 1 square ignoring tackle zones. The new set-up must be a legal set-up (3 Min on the LOS, 2 in each wide max.)

4) Kick-Off

5) Receiving team goes first.

My feeling is that this would also be closer to American football, and put more of an emphasis on offense as well.
