Record long recovery streak with Nurgle

Post by Smeborg »

In a season of two halves, my Nurgle team, Poetry in Motion, has performed as follows:

- First 19 games: 13 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses. Included a winning streak of 8 games. FF went up to 13.
- Next 19 games: 5 wins, 3 draws, 11 losses. Included a losing streak of 5 games. FF went down to 4.
- 39th game: a win, FF went up, and skill-wise it seems that the team has recovered to a semblance of normality (14 healthy players, 16 skills). Plus the princely sum of 40,000 in treasury...

In a bash-heavy league, the team has lost 25 players to deaths and retirements (7 Warriors, 3 Pestigors, 15 Rotters, value 2,570,000). More importantly, these ex-players took 265 hard-earned star player points with them... (by comparison, the team has retained only 205 SPPs). Unsurprisingly, life get's hard when you lose over half the SPPS that you earn.

This is a record length of time for me for a team to recover from a "death spiral". I thought I would share it with you. Normally half a dozen games is enough for most teams, but obviously not for this bunch of talent...

ouch.

It seems like there's a few coaches who've had complete flame outs with nurgle.

It doesn't really seem like the decay is taking the biggest toll either....

That's right. Decay is not good, but most of the lost SPPs have been on positional players. The 3 Pestigors took half of the lost SPPs with them. The Warriors just seem to die randomly (I recall the best one died from an incidental one die block by a rookie Zombie).

I think what hurts is not only (a) the lack of starting block, but (b) the clumsiness of the team generally, which means they cannot dodge away from "traffic". Plus no doubt (c) the relative randomness of Regen (relative to Apoths).

An Apothecary is a better player-preserver than Regenerating players if you pay 10k per instance. It's hard to notice on Undead-type teams because they create so many matchup problems that the added player cost is absorbed by the efficiency of distribution (or in the case of Khemri, the extreme balance of the team as a whole). But Nurgle is just a novelty version of the average bog-down team, so the disparity is much more evident.

Yeah, I like Fend on this team. It's getting to the second skill that's the challenge!

Nurgle are prone to getting mashed from time to time. This particular team just got unlucky. For example, the critical Regen rolls always failed. Most of the deaths on SPP-rich players could not have been prevented by any skills. For example, the one die block by the rookie Zombie was just a pure POW which killed the Warrior (this one example will do for the rest).

The team has recovered, now, I believe, but we are nearly at the end of the season. Have to wait until JAN for the new strategy. Nurgle are always hopeful, a bit like Gobbos...
