Beating the Orcs with Humans

Post by beregrine »

I play the basic rules. When the Orcs play the Humans the Orcs get the ball they get into a pack and slowly march down the pitch, injurying the Humans. The Human players can`t get near the ball. For the coach on the receiving end it`s` very tedious and not at all enjoyable. If the Humans get the ball they are obviously fast and that is their advantage but if they kick off they may as well not bother. Can anybody advise a stratagy ?

Try using the advanced rules. Assists on a block make all the difference.

Basically defend by stopping the Orcs moving towards your endzone without letting them get many blocks. Either dodge away (Catchers are good for this) or block back. Usually I would some of each every turn. If you can make the Orcs take risks by trying to outflank you your speed should give you the advantage.

Yes, definitely advance to playing the full ruleset before thinking about strategy alot.

The basic rules are nice to learn the basics of the game in a first test match, but do not make an enjoyable ruleset to stay with for longer.

Thank you for your responses to my question. I have read the advanced rules and I`m not sure they will help me. If the Orcs are marching down the pitch enmass and I block a player and use assist, the Orc coach can then use assist to defend and more than equal my strength. The Orcs are all grouped together after all. So what should I do?

Nullify his assists, and pick on the guys on the edge (corners) of the bunch, then go ball hunting, make him play the ball, otherwise slow him down to the point that he has to make some risky move inorder to score.

Alternatively just sit in front of him and make the drive go sideways. If they can only hit on the blitz each turn an Orc drive can stall quite quickly and he will have to start taking risks to move downfield, leaving you an opportunity at some point.

Doesn't always work, if you get a lot of dodge failures or he gets injuries on his limited block/blitz opportunities, but then what does work all the time in Bloodbowl.

What do you mean by nullifying his assists and going ball hunting? I am using what I believe to be the second edition rules.

Can I ask what teams came with the box? 2nd edition is quite old I started playing 10 + years ago and we were already on the 3rd edition, but you can get 1st and 2nd edition on e-bay, I think 1st edition is card players, 2nd edition had 16 man teams and 3rd edition has the 12 man Human and Orc teams.

doubt anyone on here plays second edition much if at all

going to be very little information about it on the net as well

3rd edition was released in 1994 and there have been a lot of updates to those rules as well

Hey I still got the ole Rulebook and handbook laying around. Some great fluff in there, always good to pull out and read every so often.

Those orcs and humans still see much action these days, great for demo games.

The version I have is the one with Orcs and Humans. Humans, 2 Blitzers,2 throwers, 2 catchers,6 linemen. Orcs, 2 blitzers, 2 black orcs,2 throwers, 6 linemen. It`s the same set featured in White Dwarf 177,September 1994. If there are new versions of the rules, where can I get them from?

Wow, quick look back and I see some great old rules that have been worked out of the game.

Prone Blocking
Moving and Blocking, with every player on your team.
No evidence of a turnover rule.
Heroic Tackles! Sounds impressive at least.

Well okay maybe not so great.

But I do like the old passing table, which says some passes are better thrown than others. Although the simple Agility rule used now is much simpler and accomplishes the same thing to a lesser degree.
