Tournament idea need opinions
I am looking at running this years Bongo Bowl tournament as a league format but I am unsure if this is a wise idea.
The tournament consists of 6 games: 3 games are using the standard BB board and the other 3 games are using the dungeon bowl rules on a custom board. The games will alternate between the 2 boards.
My main question is if I am running this tourney as a league format where your team does not reset after every game and you could lose, buy or advance players then what are the pro's and cons of this type of tournament format.
I am looking for peoples opinions so please be honest no matter how brutaly it may be.

If you have a shocker first game and get all bashed up and suffer 4 rips then your rest of tourney is dull. Inducements helps a bit I guess.
Also, teams like elves would benefit from being better at skilling guys.

Re: Tournament idea need opinions
My understanding of why this style of progression tournie has gone out of fashion (although there are tournies esp. aussie ones which use it) is that it can give some coaches a reason not to turn up for day 2.
It doesn't take too many of those to screw up your day.

The Dungeon Bowl format may take a long time in some games...you may need to limit any play time to the standard 2 - 21/2 hours..

Some of your games take 21/2 hours? Wow. I'm glad we have never met on the pitch!Pug wrote:The Dungeon Bowl format may take a long time in some games...you may need to limit any play time to the standard 2 - 21/2 hours..

Re: Tournament idea need opinions
My feeling is that these types of tourneys went out of fashion due to the LRB4 system of inducements and lack of journeymen.PubBowler wrote:My understanding of why this style of progression tournie has gone out of fashion
But I think with the LRB5-6 inducement system, this is far more viable. Even an injured team will start with 11 players and will get inducements to help make up the difference.
This being said, I think it will also make for interesting coaching decisions in botht the team creation and the games played. More coaches will be actually buying apothecaries again, and some coaches will no be more cautious in their style of play as there would be no more resurrection!

Re: Tournament idea need opinions
They ran last year's Britcon BB as a league and the feed back from the guys that went was pretty positive. As Craig points out, under LRB4, you were screwed if you took a pasting in game 1 (CAS-wise), but under the current rules, journeymen + inducements instead of the handicap table, make this format a lot more workable.

I'll be running it as a league again this year too.Leipziger wrote:They ran last year's Britcon BB as a league and the feed back from the guys that went was pretty positive.
For those that get well and truly beaten up (a few times in a row) I'd suggest taking them aside and offering them a chance to replace their roster with their starting roster.

Re: Tournament idea need opinions
This is true, and the largest tournament in Australia - CanCon - (70+ coaches two years running) - has always been a progression tournament. In fact until I came over an introduced Res all the tournaments were progression. One thing I've noticed is that LRB5 makes progression a lot more viable tournament format - specially since all the remaining progression tournaments use the "pick MVP" optional rule. There is a pretty strong correlation between TV and final position - which is what we'd expect. So although its a lot better under LRB5 it still makes a big difference about cas, winnings and just normal SPP accumulation.Leipziger wrote:They ran last year's Britcon BB as a league and the feed back from the guys that went was pretty positive. However the real killer of progression tournaments is cheating. Unfortunately there are a great many opportunities to cheat in a progression style system - bonus SPPs, extra winnings, better skill rolls, even just under-cooking your TV. To try and prevent it you need to collect a lot more information from coaches about the game result - and then really you need to inspect it, which is basically impossible for any reasonable sized tournament.

Is cheating that common at tournaments?

don't think so
tends to get self policed very well, but using normal progression gives far more opportunity and it harder to police

Re: Tournament idea need opinions
Wasn't there a guy who used to change the casualty score on the form on his way up to the main desk? He won lots of "most cas" prizes iirc.Grumbledook wrote:don't think so

So if people are willing to cheat in this way, then yes, sadly, I expect they are.
I also remember Gav (Valen) using amazons at the first poo bowl and his roster was out by 5 TR... disgusting. (There's a joke here if you know it!)
