In my opinion choosing a team to play depends mainly on 2 things:
1) What kind of league are you playing in? Is it a hard hitting league with lots of fouls, then you will not have fun playing wood elves. If it is a league full of passing teams, then you will not have fun playing dwarves.
2) What is your playing style. Personally I'm not that good with slow teams like dwarf or orc. Wood Elves however are my favorite. Best team in the game for me - because I know how to play them well.
Of course you have to add to this the fun of trying out different kinds of teams. Being good with wood elves is exactly the reason why I am currently trying out chaos and orcs.

sounds like your friend had too much starship troopers in his diet, that stuff'll give you indigestion!
Nah, it was just a warning cuz i think sometimes ppl start with humans to give themselves a better chance and consequently dont enjoy it as much as they could

My very first post
I just go for the team with the best models... Humans then. I think they're the most fun to play because you can use different plays. You won't pull off a hitting play with Woodies... unless you're as lucky as the one player in my league

mr mojo's thoughts are mostly quite concise and accurate, but he left off wood elves. They are even more fragile than high and dark elves, but are also faster...they are also the only elf team that has access to big guys, a treeman, which will help anchor the line so you don't get so many elves killed.
i would also say that you don't have to start with humans. it's one good way to learn bb, to start with the average, but it's certainly not the only way. my first team was dark elves, and I almost won my first game with them, too...failed gfi into the ez on the last turn did me in. welcome to elf curse! =\

My first team was dark elves too. I think they are the perfect novice team, with ag4 and av8 they adapt well to their opponents. Against other elves and skaven they can go violent, and against tougher opponents they can go dodge, running and pass. As a newbie youd be able to try both ways out. And witchelves are wicked.
I got to the semifinals in our league, where I gave walkover since i couldnt find the time. I wonder how far i could have gone?
Now im trying out chaos, and thats an entirely diffrent ballplay.

A friend of mine started with DEs recently. Two deaths and two niggles in his first three games mean he's kind of dissillusioned about the whole BB scene. I managed to talk him into staying in the league though... I think he may be taking Orcs.

Same thing happened with three new players to BB in the league I run...Wood Elves, Lizardmen, and Amazons...between all 3 and 2 games they had suffered at least 8+ deaths collectively. Fortunately they are still sticking with it...

The end-zone “line of death” does not discriminate when one tempts fate by using a “go for it” to pass over it.

well if your a newbie, with a rookie team, facing veterans, with veteran teams thats bound to happen. Then id suggest orcs, since they have the highest av of all of the teams, and they still are pretty versatile.
In my personal case i was a newbie, with a rookie team, facing veterans with rookie teams.
This makes it a much more viable option to choose any elf team as they usually can give any other race a match, even if they have seasoned coaches. (as long as the team itself is as rookie as the elven one). Of course your bound to feel some pain from time to time when loosing players, but an average av of 8 for DE aint that bad. Only witchelves have 7, and they shouldnt be hired anyway, until you can protect them properly. With a little luck, some brains, some more luck, and the most important aspect of blood bowl gaming, your opponents bad luck, you can be at the very top of your league for your very first season ever. With a little luck.

In our league, we'd all started with rookie teams, and one of the deaths and a NI was against a rookie chaos player with no idea how to score (sent his SH beastman with the ball in a mad rush for the endzone alone- got mobbed by about 6 DEs and KOd). Of course, the chaos player won, 1-0. The DEs were just unlucky. Really unlucky, continuously.
