Picking up the ball question.

In the rules it states that it is a turnover if you fail to pick up the ball.
But what if you fail to pick it up, BUT it bounce on another player and back to the person who tried to pick it up, and he manage to catch it.
I would still think you suffered a turnover, but as i am not sure i post it here to hear if i am right.

A failed pick-up is always a turnover, even if it bounces off a prone player and the player who failed the pick-up catches it.

hmmm
we always play that if a fumbled pass/failed pick up etc. is caught by a member of the same team then no turnover takes place - this happens so infrequently that the rare cases it does, it usually adds to the fun

That's definately a house rule then. The rules are clear that those are turnovers even if it does eventually come to rest in your player's hands.

So lets say you fail to pickup the ball, it bounces to the guy next to you, who also fails to pick it up. The ball the bounces back to you. If you have the catch skill, would you be able to use catch on a failed pickup of a bouncing ball that comes your way? Or would sure hands be the appropriate skill?

The ball is bouncing so it's a catch. It's also still a turnover because you failed the pick-up.

I didn't do a good job of explaining my question, sorry. What I was trying to say: If you fail a catch on a pass and it bounces to the guy next to you and he catches it, its not a turn over. The guy next to you is allowed to use his catch skill in catching a missed pass. The ball never touches the ground and is presumably in the air the whole time.

On the other hand, when someone tries to pick the ball up off the ground and fails and it scatters to you, isn't the ball still on the ground because there was no possession of it, so wouldn't sure hands be the skill? Or is it considered to be up in the air, so the catch skill would apply?

I'm not trying to justify anything, its just how my thought process is working and I'm looking for clarifications (too many years of playing American Football). Is it that any moving ball involves the catch skill and any stationary ball involves sure hands?

The ball is bouncing so you can use the catch skill. If you want to consider it up in the air now, I guess you could if it helps ya. Really, a ball is either sitting still or bouncing. If it's sitting still you need Sure Hands, if it's bouncing for any reason, failed pick-up, missed catch, player pushed back into it..., whatever, you need to use the Catch skill. Proximity to the ground has nothing to do with it. It's only wether the ball is moving or not.

Sitting still = Sure Hands
Bouncing/moving = Catch

and receiving a hand off involves a catch roll (just so you wouldn't considder that a "still" ball)
