Is rebuilding ever the right answer?

Post by mattgslater »

Here's a test case.

My buddy just played his rookie Skaven against my rookie Khemri. The Khemri won 2-1, and inflicted 6 casualties on the Skaven. Worse, the casualties were two dead Stormvermin, a dead Linerat, a niggled Linerat and a MNG Gutter-Runner. He rolled a 10 on his Thrower's improvement, and took +AV.

For the next match he's running: a +AV Thrower, 3x GR, 3x Linerat, 4x Journey-Rat, 3x TRR, Apoth. That's 920k TV. He's broke after hiring the Apoth. Should he press on, or reset? The league rules let him get one less net game if he resets; that is, the result of game 1 is logged either way.

He does have two guys coming back after one game, so half the Journeymen are for the next game only. His "permanent" TV is 850k, with 9 rostered players (he started 12). It's 180k winnings to replace the Stormvermin. He also still has his skill contingent mostly intact (except the MNG GR, but he'll be fine).

Reset. The two dead blitzers really hurt.

At such an early stage I would 'erase and rewind' if the league allows it.

He's allowed to reset his team. The loss goes on his permanent record, but what that really means is that he can play one less total game if he resets. I agree, the loss of two SVs is just too much. If it had been two Linerats and one SV, or if one of those SV had just been SI'ed (or even statlossed, just not -ST or dead), that would be different.

I think he may end up toughing it out for giggles. We had kind of a funny exchange. After the first half, he had just one dead SV, and was talking about retiring the team. I told him it wasn't nearly that bad, and he should carry on. But then the other one went down, right? So last night, I asked if he was going to reset now that he had no Blitzers at all. He asked me if I thought it was smart and I told him I thought so, and at least Digger agreed. But then he looked at me, and said, "What the f***. I'm just going to keep 'em going!" So I guess that's that.

He scheduled a match with a rookie Dark Elf team, kind of a newish coach who could use a punching-bag to get started on. He's talking about toughing it out and inducing Fezglitch, and if his MVP goes to a JM, just hiring the guy (assuming he wins 50k, which isn't really that safe an assumption). They haven't played the match yet (and probably won't all week), so there's still time....

as a general rule of thumb my human team gets destroyed each season with only 4 original players left on the roster (two blitzers, a thrower and 2 linemen) everyone else has been seriously injured into retirement or murdered at some point. its become somewhat of a tradition to rebuild the roster bigger and better! (as big and bad as humans can get at least).

with a team essentially shattered this early? not sure if i'd try but hey, i can promise that those skaven will develop into one loved team if he does stick with them and manage to pull them from the brink :)

Thats the spirit

play the next match and see what happens, (he can still reset after that i assume) With 2 on the way back and (possibly) being able to purchase replacements he may find himself in a happier place, and of course this fightback will become the stuff of legends!!

To often I see coaches sack a team after 1 bad result (altho' usually not this bad)

If it were me, given that the first result is recorded anyway, and the team has lost far more in value than it gained during the match (in SPPs or skills), I'd restart this team in a heartbeat. There's just nothing of value to loose.

But it takes a great spirit to stick with a team when it's essentially been destroyed after its very first game. In the interest of long term results it's probably the wrong choice, but it's one that I think everyone can respect.

I have always enjoyed playing on with a battered team, it's just fun. Of course you will not do well for a time (anything from 5-20 matches in my experience). But you can hold your head up high. And the current inducement system is in your favour.

Blood Bowl is Bloody!

The spirit is to keep teams, even when ****ed up!

I really don't like coaches that sacks the teams after one game. Why? What if the next team gets crushed, just sack and start a new?

Keep the team, learn to play with the crippled team and get better with it when players can be replaced.

Twice have I rebuilded my skaven team! Kicking to crippled players and building it up, saving cash for new players and get skills on the players that normaly just be "fodder".

It's Big Balls to build and stay with the team. As a good coach you never let the players down

This.

Dead linerats? Not a problem, journeyrats are just as good at taking a beating.
Dead thrower? not a problem, a GR can cover in the short term.
Dead GR? Not a problem, the other GRs can cover.

Dead Blitzers are the $hitter though. The Block and AV8 are vitally important, especially on a new-ish team.
Add in the fact he took the AV on the thrower, which isn't a great choice, amd I think a reset is the best option.

If it is a PBBL I say keep the team and take the lumps, imagine the BB cred if you ever bring the team back to respectability, and you always have a story to tell, that isnt, one time I got my ass handed to me and I quit.S.

How did he take such a pumelling?

Good on him though... tough it out, play the inducements.

Limping players... LOS duty!

Of course journeymen like LOS duty too.

Niggling... no biggie yet, just be a bit more careful, sod it LOS duty in the second half!

Thrower's has a good choice so it's not all lost.

I got lucky with my WE and over 12 games not got a single cas. Then on the 13th game got 4 ouched: The league's best thrower, apothed, a 29spp lineman dead, a catcher with 2 skills dead, a catcher with 2 skills -1st. Yeah that hurt, luckily it was a developed team. The only other was a Lino with -1ma. I keep trying to improve my linos but they get taken down all the time, each game, go on lino score and then it ends in tear.

The other skaven player has 6 in his hall of fame after 11 games. The DE has picked up its 2nd Hof member after 14 games.

I think he will have to play cautiously and get those SV back. If he's lucky it could be next game: winnings 60k +1 fame and +1 win = 80K!

Can he redo taking +AV? I don't play skaven, but that seems a poor choice.

Otherwise I'm not so sure. Losing the stormvermin is rough. But some teams play better from low TV than others, and with Fezglitch and their ability to score with a skeleton crew so long as they have their runners Skaven might actually be better as the underdogs in many cases.

If he has some time, maybe give playing the team a try outside of the league with fez in the mix and see how he finds it.
