If it's a low-skill position player, I could see cutting him on a niggle, because you can't roster his backup and you don't want to invest a lot in him, watch him die to the NI and then have to start over. If it's one of your superstuds with numerous or rare improvements, you've got a huge incentive to play through the niggle, and you were probably planning on protecting him to begin with.
OTOH, you should be running a reservist lino anyway, so if you get a niggling lino, you just stock his replacement per the original plan, and voila! Likewise in a position you have to build into. If you have only two HE Catchers and one of them niggles, no biggie: you were going to hire more Catchers anyway!
