Dungeonbowl on a regular board

Post by Joemanji »

So, just thinking of a vague possibility.

How feasible would Dungeonbowl on a regular pitch be using counters or cutouts/templates to mark walls? The original 2nd ed. game had nowhere near as many walls as the Warhammer Quest boards from the more recent mod. Just walls to separate out areas rather than rooms.

An easy way to make these markers would be using WFB bases. 25mm square ones for one square, cavalry bases for two squares, 50mm monster bases for 2x2 squares and regiment bases for (roughly) 3x1 squares.

1) Would things get too crowded?

2) Would you need too many wall pieces to make this workable?

3) Would you need to block off some of the endzone? Maybe block the widezone areas?

Comments welcome.

Surely you'd need 2 or 3 regular boards? I can't remember the exact size of the old DB stuff (can't be bothered to dig it out either) but I think that 3 DB tiles covered the old 2nd ed board, and it used 6 DB tiles plus 2 EZ tiles(?)

The idea definately has merit :)

For the record, the old tiles were 8 x 12, and there were 8 of them, for a total of 12 x 8 x 8 = 768 squares.
A standard board is 15 x 26 squares = 390, or basically half size.

of course, theres no reason why you couldn't shrink the board even if it didn't fit. i don't believe that there was even a fixed map you had to play - i believe you were invited to deign your own.

Oh yeah, the 2nd ed. was a larger area. But that doesn't mean that it was right to have that big an area ... JJ made up most of those rules on the hoof. I'm thinking of this as a really easy "pick up" version. Did the 2nd ed version have you starting with only 6 players? Or did you have your full 11 right away?

2nd DB rocked.
BTW it started with 6 players + 1 dug-out teleport per turn.

For your purpose I'd suggest creating a deck of 8 7x7 "rooms". For each game you'd then draw 4, and place and rotate them randomly around the EZ.
Each coach then places an additional 2(?) minor structures anywhere, as well as 1 door, 3 teleporters and 3 chests.

Could that work?

Mmm... kind of defeats the purpose of using the board. If you are going to use complete floorplans to cover half the pitch area then why not use all of them? Which is of course completely valid. Just not what this thread is about.

Well, perhaps you're right.

But I was just thinking cards to easily randomize. Could use a table instead. And the "rooms" would be made up of fairly few features - so not really covering the pitch.

Welllll, here's a thought that intentionally uses the foam board from 2nd edition (and could, if given the right props, work for 3rd edition board): Use stick pins (with the little colored heads) and rubber bands! Give each coach x number of sides he can place and stick the pins in the intersections of the squares (or you'd have to have thin pieces of plastic to lay on the 3rd edition board... with attendent problems of not being fixed...) with the bands over the pins to represent walls....
