Hiring Star Players. Pls help me w/ clarifying this up!

Post by Shen-Yong »

As english is not my first language, sometimes the wording of the rules cause problems to me, understanding them exactly.

As far as I understand, there are two ways to hire Star Players up. The 'normal' way, when you pay the whole hiring fee, this way buying the Star Player for your team, just like any other players. And there is 'freebooting', when you pay just half of the SP's hiring fee, but he will just stay then only for one game with your team.

Now, the section in the LRBv2 describing Star Players says the following about hiring them:

"...Star Players may only be freebooted in league games..."

So does it mean, that

a, Freebooting is allowed in league games, but in one-off games it's prohibited.
(But aside from that, Star Players can be bought for the full league, paying their full fee (just once) when hiring them)

b, In league games, you can't buy Star Players for your team, just freeboot them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think it's a combination of the two.

1) In a league, you can never hire a Star Player - you can only freeboot them for one match for half their listed price.

2) In a one-off match you hire them for their full price.

3) In a tournament, you hire them for their full price and because rosters "reset" you keep the same team for the whole tournament - injuries are ignored.

The only exception to this is Thurd the Barbarian - IMO he can only be used in a league, as he can only ever be freebooted.

Can't hire Star Players?

Post by noeleaton »

I don't understand why you can't hire a Star Player for a League team. I read that rule as meaning the you were not able to freeboot in a one-off, meaning that you had to pay full price. I did not read it as a restriction from buying the Star Players for League teams. Additionally, on page 40 of the Living Rules it states that "Star Players ... cannot earn any more Star Player points." If Star Players can only be freebooted, why include the SPP restriction in the rules?

Anyway, if someone can clarify this for me, I'd appreciate it.

Rulebook makes it pretty clear:
Page 42 of the LRB 2.0:
Star players may only be hired as Freebooters when playing league games.
A Freebooter costs half the normal amount of money to hire, but he will only play for one game.

Still not clear

Post by noeleaton »

Thank you, Galak. Although that sentence is still quite confusing (as I understood it to mean that you can not freeboot a player in non-League games, which is quite different from not being able to hire a player permanently for a League team) the second sentence after that one clarified the issue for me.
the only time you will pay the full cost for a Star Player is when they are being used as a member of a team in a non-league game.
I don't know how I missed that in earlier readings of the rules, but it certainly makes the rule clear as crystal.
