Getting an extra block on a kick-off with chainpushing

Post by Oxynot »

Ok, I read about this idea first in a post my Mattgslater somewhere deep in the nurgle thread, but I felt that this needs its own thread for easy access. Also the first diagram by Matt was simple, but then he edited it to something unnecessarily convoluted for my taste.

Also I find this idea interesting, though I have not yet tried it in practise.

Matt, let me know if the reimaging steps on your toes :)

This is a basic diagram for a two square push. I assume equal strength players for calculating assists.
X = opponents
g = grab
G = guard
f = frenzy
o = pushee
O = your other players

g grabs the opponent to your side of the field

Code: Select all

..f..O.
.gG.oO.
..XXX..
.......
......X

..f..O.
..GXoO.
..gXX..
.......
......X
then the frenzy player makes his blocks, first a push and then preferably a push-pow

Code: Select all

.....O.
..GfXO.
..gXXo.
.......
......X

.....O.
..G.fO.
..gXXX
......o
......X
There ya go, make variations when necessary.

Adding players in the backfield can be a nice insurance policy, making it easier to get 3d on the Frenzy hits. This is important, because all-2d blocks isn't enough; (5/9)^2 x 8/9 is only 27.4%.

One variant I like is to open the space on your line by blocking diagonally and following before making the Grab block. This lets you push one of your guys into another of your guys, chaining two of your men behind scrimmage. Only one gets two squares deep, but the other one has a leg up on a blitz or partitioning move (great for pushing a BOB into position to play forward on a midfield cage; that one square sometimes matters a lot). This is also nice with Orcs and the like facing ST4 midfielders, as it lets the Troll hit those guys 2d without burning any actions for assists, and while keeping him in friendly TZs.

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

I might experiment a bit with this on my online private league dark elf team. It has a blitzer with Dodge, SS, Strip Ball, Guard and Grab and a witch with Block and Juggernaut, as well as another Guard / SS blitzer. Could be interesting as an opening play against other agile teams in order to dominate the LOS and get to block an important backfield player on turn 1.

Also could be good at improving the odds of a 1 turn score with MA 7, as my other witch could do the first frenzy pushes and then the Juggs witch could blitz for two more pushes, which effectively puts the scorer in range using only 3 players! The key would be trying to make the first frenzy blocks into 3 die ones if possible to maximize the odds of getting those pushes.
