As the sample size increases, this data is just going to get better and better. I'm looking forward to seeing where teams up in this format.

Im happy to look at this when its thousands of games but currently its a bit selective. Shame games with 'equality' are not shapping up to be sensible

One of the thoughts I had with my BB:LE experience and the Matchmaking, which again only pits like TVR against each other, was that teams also do well at different TVRs.juck101 wrote:Im happy to look at this when its thousands of games but currently its a bit selective. For instance, Chaos and Orcs, both teams with great raw STR and AV do well when they get high TVR, because the only thing they really lack is skills.
I ran a Necro team for 20+ games and found they did well from 1200 to 1600 or so, I was almost undefeated. My experiences above that total found a lack of STR and other factors began limiting my performance.
Wood elves are great out of the box, but again as they got higher they performed well, but started to get limited by the amount of Tackle/Mighty Blow/Pile On out there, so they didn't push beyond 1750 too often.
My point being, I think we have an amazing rule set (thanks Tom, Martin, BBRC and others) that, due to the inherent differences in teams, styles, coaching ability and dice, can never truly be balance, unless as Tom said in the latest 3DB podcast (go listen, now!) we all play pub teams. Not saying a review should never happen, but with the C.R.P. I wonder if we are all wasting our breath? I think instead we should be pushing for GW to reinstate the BBRC and allow the LRB rulebook to live again...

One thing they should consider is going by record instead of by TV.

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

It doesnt go by TV, but if you really want to find out how it goes you should check out the site.mattgslater wrote:One thing they should consider is going by record instead of by TV.
Roughly it's according to TV, racial suitability (getting as close to 50% as possible). I'm not sure if coaching skill is in the formula, my guess is no.

When the box began, Coach Ranking was factored in (as was, I believe, Blackbox Bash Ranking (Rating?) (BBR), but I never really understood why that was, frankly), and it lead to good coaches getting paired with some hugely difficult games according to TS (a FUMBBL version of TR in LRB4 that was used to determine 'fairness', I'd say it was closer to TV, took into account skills, mngs, etc, for those not on site) that handicaps in LRB4 didn't really do a great job of helping with. Turned out that this wasn't very much fun at all. Palmed coin and coaching didn't reliably close the gap of 5 more Guard or MB players, or whatever. The general feeling at that time was that trying to produce super fair games on paper in terms of TV and the racial matchup (before coaches were considered) was the correct way to go. What we have now works in terms of producing comparable numbers such as team records. If you start pairing by those records (and less via TV), you start bringing in more Inducements and widening that TV gap to suit team record, and those games are less 50/50, making those numbers less comparable in the end. Which isn’t ideal for the online format. We tend to be too competitive for our own good, numbers seem important.
I’m not really much of a formula aficionado, but it seems to be much better than even the LRB4 days after this changed; the number of games I’m getting that I’d turn down in the choice division has been greatly reduced, the vast majority of games are pretty much ideal and straight down the middle. Whatever tweaks have been made are for the better (and I don't know what they are), I'm even considering sticking around when [R]anked switches, and I never thought I'd say that.
As for the stats debate; I think after 6 months or more solid play in both the matchmaking division and open [R]anked, there will be some pretty solid stats forming around if we expect race a to do well at TV x against race b at TV y. The LRB4 numbers were pretty solid after all of those thousands of games, it’ll just take time for the LRB6 ones to settle out. I get the point about not being the intention of the rules, and that’s fine, the argument about online play and the environment and how that sits with the rules is long worn. Concessions are always going to be have to be made between one and the other to suit how the game works in an online, infinite setting. When the site’s major leagues switch, that’ll be interesting too.
But isn’t it all moot anyway, it’s not like we’re collecting numbers for new rules at the moment, is it?
