Second Skill on a High Elf Kicker

Post by AswanJaguar »

So, I just played my 3rd game in a league in which all teams were fresh 1000TV teams (I had a bye in the 3rd round due to there being an odd number of teams, so this is the 4th round). I am coaching High Elves in this league and here is my roster:

http://bbql.org/index.php?option=com_bb ... fab48b0aa6

I got a massive -5- skill ups this game. A lot of them were no brainers, so I have done 4 of them (Dodge on a rookie Catcher, +AG on a rookie Catcher, Accurate on the Thrower and Guard on the Lineman who got doubles) but the skill up I am unsure of is the second skill on my Lineman who already has Kick.

I'm never really sure what to do with the kicker on teams, I generally don't try to get them any SPP after they become the kicker, but this guy has snagged 2 of my 3 MVPS, and sloppped a few Cas and a TD putting him at the highest SPP on the team (17).

I feel like this second skill has to do a lot for him, as I try and keep my kicker out of the action as much as possible, as I really hate kicking off without him, so if he does get a third skill it is likely to be a long way away.

So yeah, skill suggestions welcome :P I'm thinking something plain but solid like Block or Dodge, but even between those two I'm not sure which is more useful.

How do people skill their kickers, and what do people suggest?

Thanks :)

Edit: Renamed the thread to something more descriptive :)

If you keep him out of harms way and out of the action, the only thing I can suggest is something boring like Wrestle or Dodge. It wouldn't be what I would do necessarily, though any skill like that is useful. However, given how you've described your play style, there's really no other skill type out there that he could use without putting him into harms way.

Out of those two, I think Dodge would be most useful for you're planned style (it gives him a defensive skill and allows him to reroll his dodges when you run him away from the action)

Could be a deep safety with wrestle. I prefer block. Maybe diving tackle depending on league composition. Not sure dodge is as useful. DP is something to consider.

If you go safety, I almost always like wrestle. Lots of catcher types will be block/dodge or sometimes just block (like a beastman, etc). I like to at least bring them down if you hit them instead of standing next to them.

Ignoring my playstyle etc, what would you choose to put on him?

I whole heartly agree that wrestle is the best skill for your safety but I'd prefer that skill on a HE catcher with the mv 8. The more I think about it the more I think a kicking lino should have DP.

While I support DP on most teams, HElfs is one I am tentative about, and if I was to DP a player, it would not be the kicker, as getting him sent off on a foul is just as bad/worse than getting him beaten to a pulp in the brawl.

Since, on a good day, I can be kicking off 3-4 times easily, I really do like to keep the kicker on the field :P

I'd take Block or Dodge, probably Block. Given a choice between hitting a lino with no skills or something basic and Kick, I usually try to aim for the Kicker just to be a jerk. Keeping him up and running would be nice. And besides, he might as well have something useful considering how often he'll be on the pitch.

As for the foul route, one could always take Sneaky Git...I guess...

Wrestle for me. That's a great guy for dragging down breakaways. My other linos get SS and Dodge, but the kicker is more often the actor than the responder.

Yep, wrestle for me too. I used to take block on my kickers, but as they are usually hanging back on defence wrestle is better for mopping up the strays that brake through.

Actually on Elf and High Elf teams I would usually give most players dodge first and only give them block if they got guard on a doubles roll in their first or second skill up.

I would take Wrestle.

I like Wrestle on my Dark Elf Kicker too.

He's always a Safety-type.

Thank you all, I think Wrestle is a very strong choice :)

And I also prefer dodge over block first for HElf linos, but with my skill progression I haven't had one yet :P
