Monkeybowl Tribes - discussion thread?

Post by Pipey »

Hello Monkeybowlers old and new...

Assuming it's a popular idea, I'm going to run Monkeybowl as a team tournament i.e.Monkeybowl VII - TRIBES

Image

I've been toying with a few things but will probably aim for a basic structure like this:
*Skills and Tiers in a similar vein to previous Monkeybowls
*A "Captains' Picks" system similar to Eurobowl where the captains decide the draw prior to the round, each with a deck of cards (to be explained)
*Depending on levels of interest, I may set this as a 48-man, 12-team event where rounds 1-3 are group matches (3 groups of 4) and rounds 4-6 are QF, SF, final. The knocked out teams will still play matches and will be eligible to win the 'best of the rest' team prize.
*The usual individual prizes will still be up for grabs, including the Watermonkey.

Assuming Easter isn't a clash, it will probably be the last weekend March / first weekend April 2012.

What do people think?

I think its a good idea but the knockout rounds prevent several teams still being in with a chance at the end and that is part of the fun. The issue at FB seemed to be that one of the "Power" teams can get an easy ride against a lower team while two good teams play against each other in the latter rounds. How about seeding teams at the start so that the big guns all play each other once - or even set up a schedule so that every team plays a similar smattering of other teams both great and small?

I also think the foremost monkey resembles Geoff :o Is this a subliminal start to his Presidential election campaign? (When is the election btw, isn't it due around now?)

Let everyone play everyone, then when its won by the Team Geordie (AGAIN), other teams can't cry and stomp their feet like little girls.

Great news, Pug! Spread the word!

Swiss vs. Knockout - points taken, just looking for a potential interesting variation. Maybe Swiss is better...

Stan - round robin will only work if we restrict to 24 or 28 (6 or 7 rounds). Would hope we'll get much more interest and get loads more involved.

Any further thoughts?

Seeding could also be thorny... but I'll look into it.

How about seeding based on previous Monkeybowls? Easier because it creates less work on the day due to people changing their mind over what race to use. Or lycos rolling a D6 (1-2 undead, 3-4 Un-dead 5 undeed 6 reroll).

Not sure whether 6 rounds of swiss teams is any less balanced than 6 rounds of swiss individual... ????
