I've got a rookie team with just a half-dozen skills and I got a second skill on a blitzer with +ST.
I'm thinking about giving that player sure hands as she would then have the holy trinity of block dodge and sure hands, which combined with the +ST should make for a pretty good ball defense - I once had a Norse runner like that and he was awesome, he could also sprint on his own behind enemy lines, and if only one defender with ST3 was within blitzing range, the touchdown was pretty much guaranteed.
The question is, I also have a thrower in the team, who got +MA as first skill. If the +ST blitzer becomes the main ball carrier then what should I do with the thrower? If I don't use her as a ball carrier then she's just a very expensive linewoman.
Or I could also give a skill such as mighty blow or guard to the blitzer, but I would then have to wait for the thrower to get to 31SPPs to get her the block dodge sure hands combo, which looks far away especially as I'm playing in a short season (10 games, which may or may not be followed by another season).
What are your opinions on this?

narg - I think both your perceptions are correct.
The +1ST Blitzer and the +1MA Thrower have quite distinct roles. One is a ball-holding Runner, the other can be made into an orthodox passing Thrower (with, for example, S-Hands, Accurate, K-Ret, S-Throw). You need the Thrower when you have to score in (say) 2 or 3 turns, but you use the Runner when receiving on turn 1 or 9 (or in a scramble).
So I would go with S-Hands on the Blitzer (the holy trinity is indeed awesome on a ST4 player - no Guard needed for the cage), and +1MA on the Thrower. In any case, +MA is golden on 'Zons, their biggest weakness is their uniform MA6.

You'd be sacrificing a lot for an ok ball carrier who's still only AG3. There's only 4 blitzers so you need them for essential things like Guard, MB and PO. With +ST she'd be a better guarder (harder to shift) and a better blocker (getting more 2d blocks off).
I think +AG or +MA makes for a better ball carrier than +ST and both cost less. +ST is great for throwing at the opponent's way but you lose that option if she's carrying the ball.

Too late, took Sure Hands...
I got lucky enough to get guard on a linewoman in the last game so now I've got 3 guards out of 9 skill-ups, not a bad start.
I definitely lack some firepower, I take more casualties than I give so I'll have to take some mighty blow next...
