GWs new paint range.
Most of you will already know about the new paint range, 145 paints, all new names taken from the 40k and fantasy universe and a massive £1000 bank slap to retailers that want to stock up on the range.

While textured paints are interesting and an expansive range is nice both my retails are having to cough up far to much money up front and GW wont even take the old paints off their hands. Anyone else looking forward to this/experiencing problems because of it?

Textured paints: go to art shop and buy acrylic with texture, if you want it ready made. Bigger pots and more paint per each pence.

IMO, GW hasn't produced a descent paint or bottle(!) since they stopped working with Coat D'arms back in the days. They might put new labels on old shite, but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would pay overprice for their paints when they can order cheap Coat D'arms or P3 (Mmmmm!) paints from Maelstromgames. (No, I don't work there OR get any commission - although I'd be happy to take it!

Re: GWs new paint range.
Was thinking about ordering the new paint set for myself and Valen, but then saw that they want £333 a pop!!! Didn't they JUST release one before Christmas that was only £175????? It's not worth the money, I don't use that many different colours, and if I want them I'll just buy a pot at a time.
I do like the new thing they've done on the website though which shows the "Painting Guides" (excellent for rubbishy painters like myself) http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... GameStyle=

@el superbeasto I think inkpwn is referring to the fact that GW won't buy back old stock, and that to put the full range on your shelves, with enough stock, is going to come at at least £1000 to independent stockists. And as most painters won't buy the whole lot, it's difficult for the independents to compete.
Personally, I won't be investing in many of these paints. My understanding is that the purpose of the new range is to remove the need for mixing paints - the advent of new shades/inks/washes means that you can paint an unltramarine with 5 paint pots and no mixing. I quite like blending and mixing, particularly as it gives me a greater degree of accuracy.

I am guessing you need a minimum order of £1000 worth of GW paints if you are an independent hobby shop. Depends if that is the starter order and if that is £1K retail or not, also if you can pick and choose the paints you want.el Superbeasto wrote:What's that, Inkpwn?inkpwn wrote:(...) and a massive £1000 bank slap to retailers that want to stock up on the range.
I don’t know why anyone would want to order all 145 paints. If you are an experienced painter then you’ll have most of the colours already so can just get the new ones or replace old ones as they run out. Even if you are going to do a lot of painting many colours will hardly be used whilst others will be run out of very swiftly.
A better idea would be to get the small starer sets that contain some models and paints, of course not much use with BB. Mind you maybe Impact or another fantasy football manufacturer could do a deal with Coat ‘d arms or something similar and have a wood elf set with a brush, team and lots of browns, greens and elf flesh.

Yeh, what Nazgob said. Mixing bone colour to my paints to highlight isn't enough hassle to warrant me buying a new paint for every colour variation.

+1 on that!Aflo wrote:Mixing bone colour to my paints to highlight isn't enough hassle to warrant me buying a new paint for every colour variation.
Besides while there's a couple of colours I use extensively, most other 'middle tones' are only used for specific projects (teams, gangs, singles), so I'd rather mix 'em myself then get several paint pots with no use for huge amounts of time...

Re: GWs new paint range.
I've been satisfied with GW paints so far, but I'm kinda annoyed that managed to double the number of paints but apparently couldn't keep the previous colours among them. Yes, there's a conversion chart, but none of them match exactly, which is just what an OCD-ish person like me needs to drive me (even more) crazy.
So I decided to just stock up on paints and hope I'll last long enough to complete the teams I really want.
On the bright side, I did just complete my humans, and if I ever get this amazing new invention called a 'Kha-me-ra' I'll put them up here!

Re: GWs new paint range.
I've never been a fan of vallejo paints.. tried them a couple times, but they seem incredibly "thin" in terms of pigment.. I shook them like hell, but they still seemed watery to me... do you need to mix them with a cocktail stick or something?
I think the best paints out there are Coat d'Arms, followed closely by P3..
I do mostly use GW paints until now, but that's because many of them I have had more than a decade, plus generally they are the easiest to find in my experience, but moving forward I will ensure coat d'arms gets my $$$
