Orc colour schemes

Post by inkpwn »

Struggling to think of an orc colour scheme for some 2nd ed orcs, I am leaning towards Orange (primary) and Light blue (secondary) but its a case of offsetting the armour from the green skin tone of the orcs and then finding yet another complementing colour for the troll skin.

I also have no idea how to paint the typical orc checkers, does anyone have a guide they can share?

Orc teams can always be a tricky one to get a good coherent strong scheme which isn't OTT. It's about balancing the multiple bold colours. I find that a lot of it depends on what skin tone you go for. Start off deciding what skin tone you like and build the scheme around that, because of the crispness and light tone skin I chose I could get away with a bright bold colour armour. However if you prefer a darker or duller tone then you might not get away with a bold colour without it over powering everything else. Personally I think if you go with orange and green and blue you have too much going on.. I would drop the blue for a more neutral color such as a beige or tan, off white, grey (would look very good with the orange)

Orcs can't go wrong with red hence why we see so many red Orc teams (not that this is bad) also can't go wrong with black and scratched up metals and chequers.

How about doing a test in a 'lesser' mini with the colours you were planning on using (a spare goblin or something along those lines)?
It may well be worth the effort.

Specifically on the colours, it all starts with the kind of green you plan on using on the skin.
If the final result is to be a 'pale green', it may be neutral enough to allow you to use two strong colours for the armour.
On the other hand, if the green is to be strong/sharp... well, you get the point.

So my two cents would be to grab yourself a cheap gobbo or two, and try out on them first.
Perhaps then you can post a couple of pics and we can share more ideas on 'colour theory's'!
:)

Most common way,is too lightly paint a grid with watered down paint, then fill in the gaps...

go Purple armour with beige cloth. Purple can either be kept bright or can be darkened up depending on your skin tone, and the beige is always good to break up two strong colours.

Quarter the shoulderpads, then quarter the quarter and so on till your eyes give out or it looks right. then use thinned paint, lots of layers and prepare to repair mistakes.

My orcs have a Red/Black/bone (though it's really a VERY dark blue) color scheme and I really like them

I have painted my orcs with white armour and mid blue uniform. The orcs skin is the normal green but the troll was painted with a bleached bone skin tone and Brown scales on his back. Some of the armour has a bit of a pattern on it.

The white armour works well against the green skin.
