Basing - Dead Grass

Post by ClayInfinity »

Am painting a DE team and am looking to create dead / yellow grass on the base.

I have regular light green static grass and have never painted static grass before...

Has anyone ever done this and offer tips? Yellow ink or washes? Drybrushing??

Also, I live in Dubai and there is NO hobby shops here, so the answer isnt to go out and buy yellow static grass ;-)

This was done with normal green static plus generous drybrushing (Orc Brown and Bleached Bone IIRC) if this is along the lines of what you're thinking. Most of it is sand, but there is a small scorched grass patch at the back of the base.

It is possible to drybrush static grass but you will need to make sure it is well stuck down otherwise most of it will come off on your paintbrush.

Do you have spray varnish? If so I’d suggest gluing the grass down well (maybe use super glue over PVA even) and then giving the base a light spray of varnish. Then you should be able to drybrush it brown and maybe add a highlight of light brown or even bone colour, depends how light you want it.

Just don’t go overboard on the glue, varnish or paint as it may end up clumping together.

I’ve never tried it before but a liberal amount of ink or wash may work too, but would suggest testing that on a spare base 1st.
