Advice for Setting up a new league

Post by The Strange Dude »

Hi guys

So our local group is setting up a league and wanted to get some advice from those in the know of things to avoid and be aware of as well as those things we will definately have to deal with.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Whereabouts? My advice would be to keep it simple, play basic LRB6/CRP, round robin playing each other once. Don't make it too competitive, be nice to each other, and encourage each other to give advice, that sort of thing.

Make sure you have a forum for contact purposes - there are lots of free ones around. Swap mobile numbers too. stuntyleeg.com is a free site that will track all your stats and rosters for you.

Cheers, we're based out of grimsby war gaming club and have just got enough people interested to make a league a viable option. So was just after ideas, and pitfalls to watch out for.

A little bit of self promotion  , but check out Zlurpcast Tactics Zone, in particular the episodes I've linked below are all about our history and the in and outs of the BABBL, which has been running for > 8 years.

From what I have heard on this forums.

Mauled teams should not be allowed to restart - it's crass.

However the Commissioner should step in to the fixtures and ask the mauled teams to play some of the more TV friendly players in the league.

Depending on your league capacity maybe play all. Also allow the players to take 2 or 3 teams in but again prevent the same team being entered and do not allow for harrassing fixtures.

Try some minor tournies after the league play.

We have had the Sunday League trophy (a nice converted Smurf on a mount) which was promptly stolen by the guy who lost - how blood bowl.

The Broken Bat - allows one free auto bribe but adds 50k to TV

Thrudd Sponsorship - roaming trophy although has stuck to the winning team so far.

The Lord's Ring Trophy - one random player is a bonehead for the game due to the power of the ring.

Sann's post is very sensible and if your coaches are all committed and stay committed will work very well.

One of the main problems that the league I play in found for straight round-robin was that all goes well for a month may be two, then 'real life' interferes. One or two coaches will not be able to fulfil there commitments or can't make it for several week on the trot meaning the round-robin starts to collapse.

The system we have tried reasonable successfully to work around this is people play as many matches as they want over say a two - three month period. Each teams top 3 (or top five, or best result against each coach) results with a maximum of one result against each team played (note TEAM not COACH) counted. The top 4 or 8 then play in a knockout.

Each coach can enter as many teams as they like, meaning if the same two guys are the only ones down for a few weeks they can play with two or three teams each and mean that they are not playing the same race week in week out.

Whatever you do I hope it works out well!

I agree with this option.

Thanks for all the help guys, listened to podcasts (already had them on the ipod along with 30+ episodes of zlurp and 3Dblock) so got lots of ideas. Having a sitdown with most of the potential league next week so we can bash out what we want to do.
