Orc skin painting advice wanted

Post by Wispa »

Hi,

I'm relatively in-experienced at painting , but I've been following various tips from YouTube and the new GW "how to" book, trying to paint up an Orc team.
Generally I'm pleased with the results but I feel the skin isn't that good, especially when I look at some of the pictures on this forum. ( these look great for example )

Here's what I've been doing ( based on GW book ) :
- basecoat Waaagh Green ;
- highlight layer of Warboss Green ;
- highlight layer of Skarsnik Green ;
- wash/recesses with Thraka Green ( Badab Black for guy on left )

Should I be doing two more layers with mixed layer colours to smooth them out or maybe "blending" with watered down paints when doing the layers?

Hoping someone can spot what I'm doing wrong / where I could improve.
Could just be a case of practice / skill I guess ;)

( first time I've shared my painting so don't be too cruel ! )

Might be the photos not showing their true awfulness, but I think the skin is great. bit more work on the white I think. Love the static grass although I never use it myself as it stops you placing the ball on the base. One day I shall find one of my painting efforts from the 70's when I started, you will laugh till you wet yourself.

Good job

If you cannot stall out for an 8 turn drive to score with dwarves then you need to go and play canasta with your dad..if you can find him.

Thanks.

Agree re the white, was layering that on top of greys but I think the paint wasn't thin enough or something.

I picked up one of those balls on a hoop from Impact Miniatures that you can stick round arms so hopefully grass will be ok.

I think you've done a fine job. The only tip I could give (and really more of a preference thing than a tip) is that the color can be decieving. Experiment using a more toned down green that isn't as bright and see if that gets you closer to the results you're looking for.

You're Orcs look great! But GW does tend to give you the bright green Orc skin recipie, which I'm not too fond off. Better for forest goblins..

I've got a Orc Skin tut here:

So here's the result of using some of the tips you all mention.

I didn't use "Skarsnik Green" at all other than for the fine highlights, instead I used more mixes of the other two colours and watered them down/used more layers on the skin. Used "Baal Red" for the wash and I liked the effect, tho I think I went a bit heavy this time in places.

Result seems a lot better and when I compare this one to some of my linemen there's a big improvement.

When I've numbered the rest of the team I'll post a complete team picture if it comes out ok.
Thanks for the tips all.

I found a great way to paint orcs. Paint a mid colour blue as a base and then use the old games workshop green wash, then finish with a highlight. Fast and looks good. Also as a side note if doing Klingon spaceships paint sky blue then do the same.

Team shot...

I did a lot of these before posting here and improving my skin technique, but when I see the whole team together I'm pretty pleased with the results.
