Re: Periodic Skaven Thread (Rat Ogre 99% painted)

Post by cyagen »

Sorry Axiom but the rat oger does not do it for me.

Nothing to do with your conversion that is incredible, but the original figure just can't seem to survive the comparison with the other skavens, especially the 2ed ones.

Your conversion makes it a decent figure, but it does not have the WOW factor of the other figs in the team.

I guess I can't please everyone ;-)

Is it a style issue or the pose? I do plan a 2nd rat ogre at some point so I can revisit the conversion.

I guess it is the style, I do not like the D&Ds miniatures and it is hard to find a figure that can live up to the old skool skavens.

I'm sorry to say it, but I agree with cyagen. Nothing to do with neither your conversion nor your painting. (You know, I generally love your conversions!) I just don't like the mini. To me it looks mostly like a mixture between a yeti and a gorilla. Sorry.
If you plan on doing one more, I'd recommend going with the standard old Goodwin rat ogre found here:
http://www.solegends.com/citcat912/c20223skaven.htm
Give it a tail and some bb padding and you'll have a rat ogre that will fit perfectly with the rest of your (beautiful) team. ;)

Thanks for the feedback - it's always good to hear where things work and don't. So far on the the Rat Ogre, the feedback (off and online) has been primarily good, and I'm more than happy with it in the flesh.

I did look at the WHFB rat ogre, but decided not to use one as I've seen several conversions based on those figures and I wanted to try something new. I think I may take another look, but will do something a bit more extensive than just padding.

What about the old Boneripper?

I have him and it has perfect size for BB, and has that 'classic' feeling that matches your team (just a humble suggestion)

Right then, next in the production line is a catcher / gutter runner. He still needs his base finishing and some tidying up of a few details (like the leg bandage which I'm not happy about)

Two questions for you:

1) is the helmet on the ground the right colour? I originally painted it the same colour as the jade green of the glove grip, but I decided I wanted it to look entirely like it was from another team and now I think the royal blue isn't quite right. Any suggestions?

2) Can anyone name the 3 donor figures in this conversion? ;)

Still more than happy to do the fat rat for you - just send the figs and I'll get it converted :)

Here's the finished painted Gutter Runner:

One of my mates suggested the star on the helmet which seems to make all the difference. Hope you like :D

Yes, the star makes it. Such a little detail, but it changes the whole figure a lot. great work! what's next?

Correct! One model successfully ID'd ;)

Surprising how much such a little detail helps. As for what's next, I have a Blitzer half painted, plus several linemen and a 2nd gutter runner undercoated.

Periodic Skaven Thread (Finished Gutter Runner)

Post by Shteve0 »

Mate, your threads are my 'go to' recommends for anyone who enjoys following conversion work. Exceptional stuff, as ever!

I'm going to take the low hanging (fig?) fruit and say the head and glove are 2ed skaven catcher. As for the legs... Are they Greendog?

Very kind of you to say so!

Correct on through catcher head, but the mitt belongs to the same human catcher as the torso. And no, legs aren't Greendog, they're GW but not BB ;-)
