Aussie Block Dice on IndieGoGo

Post by Virral »

Hi everyone,

I've just launched our Australian Block Dice campaign on IndieGoGo, I hope everyone will take a moment to check it out.

We've come up with what we feel are at once uniquely Australian and yet also clearly readable symbols for use as Block Dice. The designs themselves are by the incredibly talented Melvin de Voor, and I think he's done an amazing job transforming our design brief into reality.

The dice themselves are going to be 16mm, rounded edges just like the NAF dice and with screen printed images. This makes them sharp and easy to read, and the print itself is bonded chemically to the plastic of the die making them very hard wearing and impossible to chip.

I feel like the symbols speak for themselves, but for anyone who is still unsure... the Koala Skull is the Skull, the Australia Outline is the Pow, the Australia Outline with Leaf is the Defender Stumbles, the combined Koala Skull and Australia Pow is the Both Down and the Gum Leaves are the Push.

The inital goal is $1250, which includes three colour options:

If we reach our funding target we are going to add a fourth colour:

And from there we have several further goals we'd love to hit:

If we manage to fund Baggy Greens, everyone who supports the project will get a free set of them on top of whatever other gear they are going to receive.

Great looking dice and very reasonable prices. I'll sleep on it and see if I can talk myself into a full set.

Glad you like them, we were really pleased with how they turned out.

Less than a day in and we're already passed the 20% mark!

When you say screen printed, do you mean like logos in mouses, for example?

Not sure if the method is the same but yes that's the end result. I have sample dice that the company sent me and what you get is a dice with images but a smooth unbroken surface. That allows for more detail and doesn't gouge any material out of the die itself. If you close your eyes and run your finger over it, you don't feel anything on the surface.

They assure me that the process physically bonds the image to the plastic, and I can attest that despite several attempts I couldn't mark, chip or otherwise damage the design without using sufficient force to damage the plastic itself (i.e. I can cut into the plastic with a knife and that also damages the image, but no amount of handling, dropping, throwing or other every-day dice-related activity is going to have any impact whatsoever).

Here is a sample image from the company showing the sort of thing they can do

Image

They also do full colour printing which is a lot more expensive (but also bloody awesome based on the sample they sent me).

Image

It's not what we're used to from custom dice, which are normally engraved, but the detail and sharpness of the images on these will surpass anything we're currently used to, and I'm completely satisfied on the durability of the dice after experimenting with the samples.

I was thinking more about rubbing the dice against each other, as well as resistance to natural chemicals (skin oils). On the other hand, if miniatures get varnish... why not dice... :smoking:

After your initial question I shot off a query to the manufacturers to confirm what I was saying was correct, and this is what they came back with.
A chemical bonding takes place between the print and dice surface to ensure that the is print permanent – it can’t be scratched off but with constant use over hundreds of hours held in sweaty hands the print can erode a little, but this isn’t really a problem for most people.
While I do of course believe that my dice will be so amazing that you'll never want to put them down :smoking: I don't think your average gamer would be handling a set anywhere near enough to cause a problem.
