Undercoating, without the normal sprays (how?)

So I may be exiled to an idyllic hell hole (idyllic due to the creature comforts, hell hole because the nearest hobby shop is in Singapore). I have with me some models I would like to paint. And some paint. But no dip or undercoat spray. The former I am going to mess around with wood stain. The latter? I remember in the dim distant past using stuff like car spray paint. Is this viable? Are there any other ideas people might have?

For painting minis I've always just used Rustoleum brand spray primer. It's available in several colors and is very cheap (compared to hobby primers) and can be found at most any hardware or superstore here in the US, at least.

if your resources are limited, I don't see why using car spray paint wouldn't work. just remember to use thin coats and it might take longer than normal to dry. if you are worried about the outcome try it on just one model first, when it comes out fine do it to the rest. are you spraying metal or plastic models? if its metal you should be perfectly fine.

And remember to get matt primer spray, not gloss anything. Yeah. I've used halfords own brand in the past, to good effect, on metals and plastics.

These days though, I just paint the primer on with a brush. More to do with a lack of outdoor space and being in one of the windiest cities around...

Not going to get brush on primer in Cambodia...

Plastics, some restics, couple of metal models (the Dwarf Kings hold series, project pandora, Supper Dungeon Explore and Chaos in the Old world)

If you go with a car primer on anything but metal try just painting the tab first to see how, what you have reacts with the surface of the model. S.

No art shops at all either? If there is one, try asking for (acrylic) gesso there.

I use a cheap Acryl spray paint from a discounter, you need to be careful about the way it spray and the distance to keep.

But all in all it is much cheaper than anything else and does a good job.

I just brush on a cost of slightly watered chaos black.... Sprays are too fiddly for small batches of models!

I am a wuss. I know Gesso has to be slopped on then 'shrinks' to fit, but I can't ever slop enough, or just overdo it.

No art shops it seems.
