I had my first actual game with these guys this weekend. Obviously the team isn't finished, but a mate and I meet up a couple of times a year for a w/e of games and it was a good opportunity to give them a test run in one of our games. I ended up dropping the Rat Ogre and taking 2 Blitzers, 1 Thrower, 4 Gutter Runners and 6 Linemen in a 1050k game v his Underworld. The 4 Gutter Runners proved the difference - the ability to be a threat from anywhere on the pitch is amazing - I ended up with 4-1 win (his score was superb 1 turn TD from a lobbed goblin!). I think I'm going to enjoy using this team ;)

I'm currently basing my 2nd edition Skaven team and my 2nd edition Underworld team (little mixing and matching on the rats!)... Not sure which to take to the big (Daventry) league next season! :D

Personally I think the 2nd ed rats are still one of the best looking teams out there... Not sure I've got the confidence to start 'chopping them up'! :o

Hooray for 2nd ed rats! I'm currently finishing up some of my last Grim Reapers Skaven, and those models are always a joy to paint. I, too, haven't got the guts that axiom has to chop them up like he does...

On cutting models up, I take the view that I can always replace a failure, or use its parts for something else - it makes it seem less of a risk :)

Anyway, I painted up the 2nd Blitzer last night. He still needs basing, and it was grey and rainy this morning, so the pic is pretty poor. Nonetheless, here he is:

Image

I'd like to be able to use him with horns and the old mace tail mutation, but he'll have to stick with just horns I guess. I wonder what he keeps in those little pouches? Warpstone snuff? The testicles from downed opponents? We'll never know!

To me it's not so much about risk, just that I love the models so much that I cannot bear to cut into them!

I actually need another skaven blitzer quite badly - time to hit ebay I guess...

Thanks guys

@yggdrasil - I kind of see that, but I do have a full set of 2nd ed Skaven fully unharmed :)

I made some more progress last night, and as the sun has just been shining I took 5 minutes break from work to take some more pics:

Image

The Blitzer has been based, and I painted up another lineman (still to be based)

And a quick snap of all the rats so far (I imagine they're coming onto the pitch from the dugout tunnel!):

Thanks :) No problem on the colours - all the paints are old GW though. I'm using a black undercoat on these.

Orange:
Basecoat - macharius solar orange
Shade - blazing orange
Highlight - 70/30 mix macharius solar orange / golden yellow

I usually do 2 coats of macharius solar orange to get a decent base, then some neatening up with it again after I've shaded

Blue:
Basecoat - scaly green
Highlight 1 - 70/30 mix scaly green / skull white
Highlight 2 - 50/50 mix scaly green / skull white

That's it!

I took a break from painting the figures and put together this guy last night from spare parts:

Pulling the classic rugby hand-off pose:

He'll be one of the four Gutter Runners, probably replacing the Skitter Stab Stab conversion. I wanted to include this particular helmet as it's my very favourite one. The other spare parts were floating around so I put them all together with some redundent Elf catcher legs. Tail and greenstuff to be added, but you get the idea! I'm quite fond of the trousers - it's a nice nod to the Resurrection Gutter Runner who sports a similar pair, and it means fat rat 1 isn't the only skaven to favour a pair of trouses as part of his kit :)

I'm not 100% sold on the legs as they seem a bit lengthy, but I will reserve judgement until you've finished your work... your resume dictates I do at least that much :D

He is a runner with VLL to help with those leaps and interceptions

If you cannot stall out for an 8 turn drive to score with dwarves then you need to go and play canasta with your dad..if you can find him.

@Lunchab1es: I think this is partly due to the fact that they're skinny and also we're used to seeing skaven with a little loincloth. I've started to address that issue with a new sculpted loincloth (I still need to do the rear):

Image

I've also started filling in some of the gaps and did a bit of bulking out of the left arm so when I start adding the next layers there's something for them to stick to.

Heff's right though, if the legs are still too long, he'll just have to be a mutant ;)

Will do more work on him probably this evening
